FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2022 63 Due to the warmer weather, we are now playing on Mondays and Saturdays at 8 am at the shuffleboard courts at The Lodge. By the time you are reading this article, we should be very close to playing on the new courts or maybe even actually playing on them. They are located at The Lodge where the old horseshoe pits were and behind the swimming pool and adjacent the paddle tennis courts. We are waiting for all of the surrounding areas of the new courts to be made safe, by adding additional cement and building a retaining wall across the back of the four courts to avoid anyone falling down the existing incline. Construction has not gone as expected. It was my understanding that a cement retaining wall was going to be built across the entire length of the four courts but when the work was progressing, a cement retaining wall was only built across two of the courts. This is where we are as of the writing of this article. It is now my understanding that to build the other half of the retaining wall out of cement, the cost will be prohibitive, so the remaining unbuilt half is to be constructed of wood. Functional, yes! Aesthetically pleasing? We also need some type of shed or bin in which to store the equipment. Once these things are completed, we will be able to have some type of grand opening and celebrate the completion of this project which has taken well over two years to finish. Shuffleboard is the perfect activity to enjoy outdoors while being physically active. It is an easy game to learn and one can become proficient at shuffleboard fairly quickly. Our games usually last about an hour. We have a great group of residents who play regularly and, of course, everyone is welcome to join in and become part of the "shuffleboard family." We choose different teams each time we play. This allows us to keep the competition challenging and the games interesting. We play for fun, but of course, everyone likes to win. So after your morning coffee and/or breakfast, come out and join us. Get some fresh air and a little exercise while socializing with other fellow Four Seasons residents. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me, Marty Rotman, at (310) 948-1693 or email me at mrtmj@aol.com. Looking forward to seeing you at the courts! ~ Marty Rotman Shuffleboard Ladies Putters We have just started a new season of the Ladies Putting Group; our awards have been presented and the names of the winners will be published in the next issue of the Breeze. If you are interested in joining us, we play on Mondays at 4 pm and Fridays at 9 am. Play one day or both. All skill levels are welcome and we have extra putters and balls if you wish to experience the game but have never tried. We look forward to having you join us! ~ Susan Wilson Members of the group sometimes get have an opportunity to help at professional games or fundraisers. Phyllis Kates tells her story: Each year in late March, Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon is the site of the IOA Championship, one of the tournament stops for the Epson Tour. The Epson Tour (formerly the Symetra Tour) is the developmental tour for female golfers who are chasing their dream of obtaining their LPGA Card. All of these ladies played college golf and upon graduation most have turned pro. In 2018, I had the opportunity to serve as a Housing Host for the first time and I enjoyed it so much that I have hosted every year since. I have hosted golfers from South Korea, Finland, and Denmark. In most cases, I have hosted the same golfer(s) multiple times and am happy to say that I'm still in contact with each of them. I can tell you that being a Housing Host is a rewarding experience that I highly recommend. At right: During her third visit, Malene and I got in a little practice at our putting green. Hope she remembers everything I taught her, LOL. I first hosted Malene Krollboll Hansen from Denmark in 2021. She stayed with me twice in 2022.
