August is a hot month, no doubt. We wonder how everyone survived years ago when a fan blew air across a block of ice. Earlier than that, a homeowner would plant large trees on the east and west sides of the home to block the summer sun before it had the chance to warm the home's interior. Some of us certainly remember not having air conditioning. It wasn't very long ago when we experienced a power outage during hot weather, and The Lodge was available to keep us cool. We must be prepared if it happens again. Heat is the top weather-related killer, causing more fatalities than lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes combined. To practice heat safety, remember the following: Drink more fluids, regardless of your activity level. Don't wait until you are thirsty to drink. Keep your body cool: wear loose clothing, hats, and sunglasses. Eat cooler, reduce your protein intake. Stay in the shade, especially between 11 am and 3 pm. These are common sense suggestions everyone should follow. In July, we had our last "thank you breakfast" for residents who volunteer to serve on our committees. Breakfasts were held over several months, beginning in April, to have a more informal and relaxed atmosphere for being together. These volunteers are the backbone of our community. Your Board has a responsibility to support each committee and provide the necessary resources they need to accomplish their objectives. Committees address specific community issues and tasks, and serve in an advisory role for the benefit of all Four Seasons' residents. Each committee has a charter that defines its duties and responsibilities. Every committee has a primary and secondary Board liaison, who can answer questions, but do not interfere with committee business. Currently we have nine standing committees. They have continuous tasks and exist indefinitely. New volunteer members are sought as the need arises. Ad Hoc committees have been formed from time to time to address specific issues and exist only until those tasks are completed. An example is the Ad Hoc committee that reviewed our Rules and Regulations. This committee consisted of residents and Board members. We live in an active community. Attend a Board Meeting, listen to the committee reports, and you will learn how it "takes a village" to make Four Seasons strong and vibrant. The Board members who preceded us set the example to follow. Some have moved away, some have passed away, and some still live in Four Seasons. They had a passion to serve our community and were dedicated to making Four Seasons a great place to live. A key component to being the best 55+ community is maintaining our financial stability and strength. We are now focusing on our budget and projected expenses for the next several years. An Ad Hoc committee has reviewed all areas of expenditures, including forecasting what is required to maintain adequate reserves. They have worked with key committees, including Landscape, Facilities, and Finance to calculate future costs and how they will impact our operating budget. Accurate forecasting is necessary to make sound decisions.
