| OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2022 | 11 Goodbye, July Hello, August The Brilliant Poppy Flaunts her head Amidst the ripening grain, And adds her voice To sell the song That August is here again. ~ Helen Winslow August is the Sunday of summer. Its flower, the Poppy, symbolizes beauty, strength, marriage, and family. In Europe, it is the month of holidays. Paris is almost completely empty during this month as people take to their favorite vacation retreats. Many have named it the last month of summer and rightly so. It is the month of apples and falling stars, and the last care-free month for school children who will return to class along with eager college students. Within its calendar, we celebrate Watermelon Day, International Clown Week, Kiss and Make up Day, but most importantly, Women's Equality Day, August 26th. It marks the Ratification of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote in our country. The first sandwich was created in August of 1762. It was named after The Earl of Sandwich. History has it that the Earl was involved in a gambling game and did not want to eat a large meal, so he ordered meat to be served between two pieces of bread. McDonalds will be forever grateful! August is also a month to grab a book from our library and head to the beach. A novel that comes highly recommended by our librarians is The Guncle, by Steven Rowley. It is a heartwarming story about family, grief, and belonging. Those that have read it describe it as hilarious yet poignant. The plot revolves around the character of Uncle Patrick, a famous actor who has left the spotlight to reside in Palm Springs. He lives the easy life until his sister-in-law passes away from cancer, and his brother deals with health issues. He agrees to take in his niece and nephew for the summer. He creates lighthearted "Guncle" rules to distract the children from their grief. Despite his rules, Patrick has no idea what to expect, having spent years getting over the loss of his own love. Patrick's eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility, and realizes that, sometimes, even being larger than life means you're unfailingly human. "A moving tribute to the power of love, patience and family, even in the most trying of times." ~ Country Living "Wise and hilarious." ~ People "A feel-good summer escape." ~ AARP Just remember that your library is a wonderful place to sit, relax and browse through our many offerings, including non- fiction.
