There have been interesting developments within the Club
organization. Under the direction of President Rich Halkyard, and a
meeting of highly interested members, creating separation between
hikes and walks has shown to be very successful. Walks such as 2.8
miles from Moonlight Beach in Encinitas to Beacon Beach at the
foot of Leucadia Blvd, with a turnaround at Beacon Beach, proved
to be very successful for a large number of walkers. A hike requiring
longer distances over various terrain, like the Cerro de La Calavera
Loop trail in Carlsbad, prove to be challenging, and, again, highly
successful for a large number of hikers.
Most walks and hikes are scheduled on Thursdays and Fridays.
Saturday hikes have been added for those who work and can get
away only on weekends; they are exploratory hikes in preparation for
a similar hike to be scheduled at a later date.
Aug. 5: A walk is scheduled in the Solana Beach/San Elijio area.
Particulars will be announced by email and on the internet site
Meetup.
Aug. 6: A hike on Thunder Spring Trail
Aug. 12: Hike the Santa Margarita River Trail
Aug. 18 or 19: Walk Gonzales Canyon
Aug. 20: Hike the lower Doane Valley and French Valley
Aug. 27: Hike the Boucher Fire Tower Loop
In mid-July, one of our first social gatherings was a luncheon on
the Lanai. There have been individuals who have contributed greatly
to the Club over the years, planning/organizing/leading hikes — Ed
Gunderson, Bill Nupp, Tim Pentel, Jack Shabel — these people were
honored at the luncheon. Good event, attended by both old and new
members.
Those reading this write-up about our Club for the first time, join
us. Walking or hiking outdoors is priceless.
