44 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2022 | Racquet Club Golf Club The summer women's pickleball tournament brought out the best in the 44 players vying for playoff slots to determine precious berths in the afternoon finals at the Pavilion courts. After an action-packed morning of pickleball play and a welcome mid-day recess, teams competed in 15-point games to determine divisional winners. More than 100 residents filled the patio and lined the fences to watch. The addition of a USAPA-certified referee (resident David Levine) to oversee the games added to the festive atmosphere. The Novice division victors were Gail Latino and Jeannette Weiss; runners-up were Paula Burdy and Sara Stewart. Intermediate division honors went to Barbara Finney and Sally Palmer; Carol Alberts and Carol Ann Ferrol were runners-up. The Advanced division champs were Joyce Baker and Heidi James; Diana Haas and Paige James were runners-up. A lively social on the Lanai capped the day. The Racquet Club men, led by John Gildner and Craig Cameron, ran all aspects of the successful tournament assisted by a cadre of volunteers including Jerry Abshier, Harvey Bernstein, Bob Berthel, Charlie Cappello, Rob Ganz, Dave Johnson, Rob Ryan (and Donna!), Van Rhonheimer, Sid Saltzman, and Tom Vaccaro. Guy James has organized a series of Thursday evening single- session pickleball skill classes for "intermediate and above" level Racquet Club members. To ensure that our club activities – new and old – are meeting the needs and expectations of our members, President Bob James introduced the "Game Changer Project" to solicit candid, anonymous input from randomly chosen members who participate in each event. That feedback will then be used by the Board and committees to improve the "member experience" with each future event. Donna Ryan leads the project. The golf course is still closed! More later. But some golf has been played by our residents, including The Touring Amateurs Event Held Mon., June 20 at the challenging St. Marks Golf Course. The earliest starting time of 7:32 am didn't deter the sleepy but happy foursome of Randy Royter, Alan Ballard, Jim Mulvey, and Bob Fisher, who posted the amazing low gross of the day of nine under par. Looks like, as usual, I'm the shortest one in the photo. Oh well. That low score was helped by Randy Royter, whose 70- yard third shot on the par five seventh hole went in for an eagle. Nice. The Magic Circle winners of the tourney were Greg Cies, Fred Peppe, Joel Rabe, and Adrian Verduzco. Closest to the Pin winners were Lois Russell and Dan Okada. Way to go everyone! By the time this article appears, there will be only four more Touring Amateur Mondays: Aug. 15 at Oceanside Muni; Sept. 19 at Lomas Santa Fe Executive Course; Oct. 17th at Pala Mesa; and on Nov. 14 a return to the Welks Fountain Course. Thanks again to Kathy Hunt for organizing our games. She is pictured above signing in Judy Frye at St Marks. An update of the July Touring Amateurs results at St. Marks Executive Course and a review of July Membership Meeting will appear in the next issue.
