Art Lovers A visit to the recently expanded and reimagined Museum of Contemporary Arts in La Jolla is an extraordinary and enlightening experience. The stated mission of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is to invite all audiences to "experience our world, our region, and ourselves through the prism of contemporary art seeking to inspire expansive thinking and an inclusive world." Located on a three-acre stunning oceanfront campus, MCASD's flagship La Jolla location was originally an Irving Gill-designed residence, built in 1916 for philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. After several transformations since 1941 the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla reopened in April 2022 after a four-year complete renovation. The art museum focuses on the collection, preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of works of art from 1950 to the present. One of their distinguished paintings, Red Blue Green is by Ellsworth Kelly, (1923 – 2015) an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker associated with hard-edge painting, color field painting, and minimalism. He was a leading exponent of the hard-edge style, in which abstract contours are sharply and precisely defined. Though often associated with Minimalism, Kelly's art preceded the movement by a decade. Ellsworth Kelly's style emphasizes pure forms and colors. In the fall we hope to visit the Oceanside Museum of Art which is featuring an exhibition by Gail Roberts called Color Field. There are over 130 paintings of singular flowers in her Color Field series, all the same size (20" x 24"), and completed over a five-year period. Color Field refers to the visible color range in nature and the paintings are ordered by hue. Roberts painted everything that blooms within the boundaries of her property. Roberts says, "As the project developed, I researched each flower's botanical history, cultivation, and natural habitat. Some of the flowers have ancient origins with fossilized specimens dating back 80 million years. Others are hybrids from as recent as the 1970s. Several species are edible and frequently used in teas, soups, salads, bread, and flavorings. However, numerous plants are quite toxic and sometimes deliberately ingested to induce harmful and/or hallucinatory effects." Details of our trip will be sent to our members soon. Malcolm lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay area for over 40 years; he worked in public accounting, high tech/biotech equipment leasing, financial services and energy sales. Upon retirement, he was able to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming an artist. Always wearing his red beret (given to him by his stepdaughter) he is attracted to landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, a reflection of his Scottish heritage, as well as scenes of California. He finds beauty in the earth tones of rugged mountains, and the always changing colors of the Pacific Ocean. On display, for your pleasure, is a beautiful oil painting of Scotland, entitled Three Sisters of Glencoe. And, of course, after enjoying Malcolm's art, do continue your art appreciation journey into the Art Studio where you will be fascinated by the exhibit of work by the Papercrafters. Their attention to detail, fanciful shapes, heart-felt sentiments, texture, color… everything "artful" that you could imagine! Come and enjoy, and perhaps even join their friendly, fun group! We appreciate the energy of our artists and their wonderful talents! Gail Roberts, Color Field View from MCASD La Jollla Red, Blue Green by Ellsworth Kelly
