32 | THE COLONY NEWS | OCTOBER 2022 |
I don't know about the rest of you, but as I get older, technology
gets more complicated and it takes me longer to catch on,
especially with DNA genealogy research. John Murphy to the
rescue! John has volunteered to be our speaker this month
using Gedmatch as a tool for your DNA matches.
John has been a member of The Colony Cousins Genealogy
Club since 2011 and has been serving generously as our
Treasurer for several years. He started researching his family
in 2008 when he helped his daughters join Daughters of the
American Revolution. He knew the names of five great-
grandparents but little else. Now, after years of research, he
has a wealth of information about his ancestors from Ireland,
England, Jamestown and The Mayflower. He is also a member
of the Sons of the American Revolution.
John was employed as an aeronautical engineer for 30 years,
is highly educated, and has three patents. His presentation will
be "How to Use Gedmatch to Break Down Your Brick Walls."
He will show us how using this website helped in his family
research and the potential problems of the service.
Our meeting will take place in the Annex on Tuesday, Oct.
11, at 1 pm. Visitors are always welcome and may join if
interested. Everyone is asked to sign-in at 12:45 pm so we can
begin promptly. If you have any questions, call Lennie Martin
at (503) 269-9987.

The Colony Ukulele Strummers invite anyone interested in
learning a new and easy instrument while having fun! We meet
each Friday at 1 pm in the Annex. We play, we sing and laugh a
lot. You do not have to read music and we don't care how well or
badly you sing. Our music ranges from old time folk tunes to pop
and rock and roll. Come and check us out and sing along with us.
For more information, please call me at the above number.
