| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2022 | | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2022 | 61 61 Members and guests of the Sun Lakes Tennis Club gathered in the morning on Aug. 20 to get organized for a truly fun event, a Member- Guest Mixer. A total of 24 players participated, 12 teams, each one made up of one member of our Club and one guest. Each team stayed together throughout the two-plus hours of fun-filled competition. This was followed by a delicious barbecue lunch on the patio with about 30 sitting down around tables for the meal. This Member-Guest Mixer was unique in that the teams remained intact throughout the morning, and they had no specific limits as to age, gender, or skill levels. Two Beaumont High School students, for example, were guests on two different teams. Further, we included more than one 4.0 skill level player and several 3.0 skill level players. With the emphasis on having fun, no winners were declared nor prizes awarded. The overall impact was enjoyable, something that suggests that Club members can expect this event to be on the schedule in the summer of 2023. Now, a Tennis Tip from our tennis pro, Phil Hazelton, about serving. Phil tells us that the serve is probably the easiest stroke in tennis. Its motion is exactly like the throwing motion of a baseball or football. All parts of the body need to work together – legs, hips, shoulders, and arms. However, the toss is the most critical part of the serve! To serve well and do so consistently, lift the ball. The ball should not be flicked with one's wrist. Lift with the palm of your hand. A good practice tip is to (without racquet) lift the ball with your tossing arm, and then catch the ball with the racquet hand. Further, catch the ball on the top of the toss, not on the way down. Have your tennis pro show you this. It will increase your serve consistency. As always, keep your eye on the ball and the fun in your game. ~ David Nethercott Tennis
