Friends we will miss Kate Cooke, known as Kath by her family and friends, passed away on August 29, 2022 at the age of 99. Kath was born in Rotherham, S. Yorkshire, England in 1923. During WWII, she was a riveter in an underground aircraft manufacturing plant. After the war she was a conductress on the city bus system where she met her husband Joe. In 1957, the family moved to Canada, and in 1964 the family immigrated to Whittier, California where they became citizens of the United States. In 1998, the British invasion of Sun Lakes occurred and Kath along with several of her British friends moved to Sun Lakes. Kath loved living in Sun Lakes, and enjoyed many of the activities offered here. Her all-time favorite was Tuesday night bingo where she made many friends. She always looked forward to the bus trips to Laughlin. She never lost her British accent and her love of a cup of tea. Anyone who visited was offered a "cuppa." Kath was preceded in death by her husband Joe in 1978. She is survived by her two sons, Steve and Kevin, daughter-in-laws Nita and Marcy, six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. We will miss her! Elaine Anne Abrams passed on September 10, 2022. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Norton (Norty), in 2018. She is survived by daughters Randi (Gonzalez) and Barbara (Smith) and sons Steven and Michael and their families. She was a mother, grandmother and recently, great-grandmother. Born in Chicago, IL in 1932, Elaine and Norty moved to California in the 1950s where they raised their family in Riverside and Torrance. A resident of Sun Lakes Country Club for 25 years, she was a golfer, an avid bridge player, and active in her clubs. As a long-time volunteer, she was especially proud of her work with Banning Unified School District, VFW Post 233 and San Gorgonio Hospital maternity ward. While raising her children, she was active in school and sport functions and volunteered for many years with ORT. She will rest with Norty at Riverside National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the VFW and San Gorgonio Hospital. Submit your Friends We Will Miss to sunlakesnews@yahoo.com. Please keep remembrances to 400 words and include one recent, high-resolution photo. 68 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2022 |
