| THE COLONY NEWS | NOVEMBER 2022 | 29 Our Artist for November is our international artist Donald R. Britton. Don's first drawing instruction was from his father when he was only six years old. After receiving a BA from the University of Colorado, he went on to receive his PhD from Ohio State University and started a career in Neuroscience Research. Don committed to painting full-time in 2004. His subjects range from the desert Southwest to the California coast to the peaks of the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada. He has an affection for Lake Tahoe and the ocean and desert areas from his home in Southern California. Virtually all of Don's work begins with field trips, photographs and plein air painting done at the site, then studio painting. He is a member of several professional organizations, including California Art Club, American Society of Marine Artists and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. Recent awards and publications have been 2019: Juror's Purchase Award, Pacific Bluffs, and "Art for Heaven's Sake Annual Art Festival," Redlands. 2016: First Place, "Land Put to a Higher Use," at the 9th Annual Ralph Love Plein Air Competition in Temecula. 2014: "Canyon Clouds" and "Carmel Wetlands" were juried in the Museum of Art Institute Regional Show in San Diego. 2012: "View from Mother Paint" was selected for installation in the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka. Altogether, Don has been selected for three different U.S. Embassies. There are many more awards that he has received from early in his career as an oil painter. Don's materials are oil paint on cotton or linen canvas. Most recently, during October Don's collection of over 40 paintings were on exhibit at the Poway Center for Performing Arts. You can see more information of Don's work at his website www.donaldrbritton.com. Thank you so much, Don, for sharing your wonderful talent with your friends and neighbors here in our Clubhouse Lobby. Artist of the Month By Sylvia Maxwell, 818-667-1766 To all watercolorists! Our last class this fall was Oct. 27. We will resume our classes on Thursday, Jan. 26, and continue them on the last Thursday of each month. To any beginner who would like to join us in January, please call me to receive a materials list. This will give you time to shop for your supplies or put them on your Christmas or other gift lists. We are planning future workshops by Betty Pilley in the new year, so be sure to mark your calendars now for class each month. This has been a fun-filled year, and those of you who have had the opportunity to join our workshops have seen how rewarding and educational they can be, as well as fun and enjoyable. Keep painting! If you have any questions, please call me. Watercolor Classes By Sylvia Maxwell, 818-667-1766 Mark your calendars now for Saturday, Dec. 3, at 7 pm, or Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3 pm. You won't want to miss attending one of The Colony Chorus' Christmas/Holiday Concerts titled, Starry, Starry Night. The music will be full of wonder, inspired by snow, ice and stars. We'll sing newer classics like Frozen and Polar Express, a remade Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen), and the beautiful song Vincent aka Starry, Starry Night (with holiday lyrics). Festive melodies and sing-a-longs will round out the program. Colony residents will be notified when ticket sales will start. Also, if any singers are interested in joining our chorus, it's not too late. Please call Connie O'Brien, President, at 951-696-1796 right away to discuss it. Chorus By Kathleen Brown
