| THE COLONY NEWS | NOVEMBER 2022 | 33 Jack & Jill By Dennis Murphy, 461-0457 The September tournament is placed in the Jack & Jill archives as the first 9-hole event in its history. The heat wave of September 2022 produced a situation that had never happened in the 30+ year history of The Colony's Jack and Jill. Temperatures had been consistently reaching the century mark, putting our golfers in heat-related health dangers. We had to make a choice: face the heat in our usual 18-hole event, cancel it altogether, or craft an event of nine holes of competition to wrap up in two and a half hours to get us off the links before the heat became intense. The hearty Jack and Jill players were not going to be denied a chance to compete and chose to play the first 9-hole tournament in our history. Nine foursomes faced off for a 7:30 am shotgun start for the "Regular Scramble" competition. When it was over, everyone was still in good health, and the following posted winning positions: Winning Teams 1st: 21.016, Charles Craven, Paula Thompson, Leo Pasco and Peggy Clendenen 2nd: 21.922, Joe Cwirka, Marge Anderson, Terry Lundquist and Sue Jordan 3rd: 22.023, Larry Determan, Billie Denney, David and Pat Bailey 4th: 23.811, John and Anita Hoetker, Sam Currie and Carol Winnard Closest to the Pin #5: Women, Vicky Cornille – 5'5" / Men, David Bailey – 2'8" #9: Women, Open – 0'0" / Men, Mark Tamayo – 17'6" #6: Team #5, Del Mitchum, Char Thielen, Malcolm Grant and Sherry Roberts – 4'11" DARWIN AWARD: Mark Tamayo. The Issue: It seems Mark found it necessary to record his shot on the CTP marker on Hole #5 with distance longer than the ultimate winning golfer. Mark had 9'6", his predecessor had 2'8". This action is deemed not very sportsmanlike conduct for the game of golf. Our next contest is Thursday, Nov. 10, and will be the popular "Random Draw" competition. As with all Jack and Jill events, you DO NOT have to be a member of either the Men's or Women's Golf Clubs to play. Just pick up your sticks and join us for the fun and friendly competition. See ya on the links! Charles Craven, Paula Thompson, Peggy Clendenen, Leo Pasco Our first week of bowling on Sept. 8 was bumped by a corporate event and rendered our dinner a bust. We did not have enough time to get all the information and money required to order dinner in only one week. So as of now, we still don't have any handicaps, standings or who did what yet. We had our October dinner on Oct. 27. I don't have our Auditorium dates confirmed for next year yet. One of our original bowlers in our league, Jim Miller, passed away early September. He was a really nice man, a veteran and pilot of an F-85 fighter jet, and a pretty good bowler. He will be missed. Thank you to Andy and Lynn for setting up our table at The Colony Activities Fest Luau and talking with potential bowlers. If anyone wishes to practice bowling, show up at 12 pm on Mondays at Bowlero, and find Ralph Sanzari, or ask at the desk, which lanes are for The Colony Bowling League Practice. I will have more information next month for sure, but for now, this is it. TIME CHANGE FOR NOVEMBER: 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Thursday's Bocce will be picking up now that the cooler weather has come. Due to changing our clocks back on Sunday, Nov. 6, the start time will now be 2:30 pm. Come out to meet your friends and neighbors and enjoy snacks, your choice of beverage and a friendly game of Bocce. Water and ice are always provided.
