FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | NOVEMBER 2022 15 Thirty-three years ago, an elementary principal in Beaumont who belonged to Soroptimist International-Beaumont, discovered that a student and his family were living in their car. She asked her Soroptimist club for help. The members gathered warm clothing and blankets for the family and, because it was nearing the holidays, a few simple toys and gifts. Today, the Soroptimists, along with the entire community, still serve children through what is now known as the Winter Wish program. The program assists hundreds of children each year, assuring they receive one article of warm clothing and one gift. The process begins with a recommendation from a child's teacher, which is forwarded to the Winter Wish committee via a site liaison. Volunteer callers then reach out to the families asking if they wish to participate. If so, information about the children's sizes, wishes, etc., are gathered at that time. Community members help fulfill these wishes by selecting a tag, buying and wrapping the item listed on the tag, then it returning to Winter Wish. In December, parents pick up these gifts as well as at least two bags of groceries and a $20 Stater Bros. Gift Card. Each year teachers and support staff have supported Winter Wish tirelessly and that support is a part of what has made the program so successful. More than 671 children had a special Christmas last year, thanks, in a large part, to the residents of Four Seasons! You were joined by other retirement communities, schools, churches, businesses, service clubs, and many members of the community to fulfill the Christmas wishes and fill the stomachs of more than 224 families within the Beaumont Unified School District. Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 1, the Winter Wish Program is again asking for your compassionate participation in the 2022 Winter Wish Gift and Food Drive. To participate in this year's gift giving, simply select a paper tag at The Lodge front desk. Return the wrapped gift with the tag you chose to the front desk no later than Thursday, Dec. 1, at 5 pm. Winter Wish Winter Wish Of all the people you know at Four Seasons, do you know which people possess athletic abilities? Do you know which people in Four Seasons recently won gold medals at the Hemet Senior Oldlympics? Well, check out the photo below with most of our Four Seasons medalists. Yes, medalists! Each person in the photo received gold, silver, or bronze medals for their achievements. Check out the number of medals each person won (ie. 1G, 1S, 1B, etc.). These people are amazing! There are so many events being held every year: Shuffleboard, table tennis, Blackjack, swimming, golf, pinochle, scrabble, pickleball, tennis, bingo, billiards, bench press, bowling, Texas hold 'em, and, most popular, track and field. Each event is divided into age groups: 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-90, 91-94. This is a wonderful way for our seniors to be able to demonstrate their abilities against competitors in their specific age category. Almost all of September is devoted to the events and the Valley-Wide Recreation Department in Hemet does a wonderful job each year. Ask our medalists about the competition, how much fun they had, and then ask where and when you sign up to participate in 2023. Start preparing now and join us next year.
