60 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | NOVEMBER 2022 If you were near The Courts Multipurpose Room on Sept. 17 and you heard what sounded like a Folsom Prison riot, it was just the fun and excitement emanating from our 2022 Annual Ping Pong Tournament. At the end of nearly six hours of table tennis, the group gathered for a celebratory BBQ. The singles competition, organized by Rony Tordasillas, was the first event of the day. Ben Wang, using his tricky spin game, took first place while Alex Castanon took second. Paco Paez, who just returned from a 45-mile off- road motorcycle trip, placed third. The doubles competition consumed most of the afternoon hours. A huge shout-out goes to husband and wife team Niles and Kathie Sundstrom, who were faced with trying to corral and organize 30+ ping pong crazies who were milling around the lobby and all corners of the room. Using raised voices and a bell that managed to fall apart, they finally got everyone together to compete in eight rounds of doubles ping pong while managing to keep posted scores of the entire proceedings. In the end, Jeannine Baker, with her consistent and relentless underspin game, was the high point doubles player and took first place. Additional congratulations go out to Soo Lee, Alan Chan, Brent Stewart, and Paco Paez, who also won doubles certificates. The tournament was not only a fun and competitive event, but provided the first opportunity for all members to be together in one room at the same time. Thanks to Rony, Niles, and Kathie for making this event a success. If you believe that high-level, competitive table tennis is only confined to the The Courts, you are sorely mistaken. Many members competed in the Oldlympics in Hemet, competing for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. Congratulations to Jeannine and Niles, who both secured Silver medals, and Pete Antoine, Mitch Harmon, Julia Dobos, and Nancy Van, who all took home Bronze at this event. If you used to play ping pong when you were a kid and would like to resume playing a game that has proven to have significant benefits for seniors who want to exercise their reflexes and hand/eye coordination, stop by The Courts anytime between 10 am and 4 pm and grab a table. For a refresher course, ping pong trainer extraordinaire Jim Wong has volunteered to give free lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 pm. Come join us. ~ Bob Rubenstein, brube88@gmail.com Table Tennis Four Seasons Table Tennis Club and families Singles Tournament Winners Paco Paez, Ben Wang, and Alex Castano Doubles Tournament Winners Soo Lee, Jeannine Baker, Paco Paez, and Alan Chan
