"Gardening is still therapy even if you kill everything." ~ Quote from Pinterest Our featured speaker in October was the very knowledgeable Raphael Hinojosa, from Cherry Valley Nursery. He has been with Cherry Valley Nursery for 16 years and is one of their managers. He explained what and how to plant in the fall to give the plants a chance to stabilize for next spring and summer. Also at our meeting, our Garden of Eat-em guy, Pat Pennington, gave us an enthusiastic update on the community garden planned for Banning residents. The Banning City Council, a committee of several business owners and residents, and the Banning Chamber of Commerce are investing their energies into the project. Banning High School has also shown an interest because a Learning Center is planned for the site — an impressive project indeed. Questions? Call Pat at (951) 314-9229. Another of our many community involvements is our collecting of donated items for the Banning Senior Center's Christmas program for children eleven and under. The children can go to the center the morning of Dec. 3 to purchase Christmas gifts for their families and friends for 25 cents each. However, whatever money each child brings will be enough for all their purchases. Tables are filled with small donated items (new or unused) items appropriate for all ages from babies to grandparents. A list is posted in the display case across from the Main Clubhouse Library. For info, contact Patricia Elevi, (951) 850-3900. Many of us are eagerly awaiting an orchid presentation planned for our Nov. 9 meeting. Ron Lang and Steve Trammell will fill us in on the varieties of orchids, their attributes, and care. Ron Lang is a member of The Orchid Society and the membership chair. He also does their local newsletter. He and his wife Linda are judges for the National Garden Club Flower Shows in addition to judging the American Orchid Society Awards. Steve Trammell is also a member of the Orchid Society and the local chapter treasurer. Obviously, they both have extensive knowledge about orchids. Guests are always welcome to attend one of our meetings which (unless otherwise announced) are on the second Wednesday of every month at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Dues are only $15 a year. If you have questions, please contact Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101. Garden Club 42 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2022 |
