| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2022 | 45 Yiddish Culture Club YCC WILL HONOR VETERANS DAYS WITH A WWII DOCUMENTARY What better way to pay homage to our veterans than to celebrate their courage and dedication on Wed., Nov. 9 at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse. The YCC's November movie will highlight one of the most compelling escape and survival stories as it tells the tale of Bruce Sundlun, a Jewish-American pilot shot down into Nazi- occupied Belgium. Sundlun was a US Army Corp pilot whose B-17 bomber, "Damn Yankee" was shot down on its 13th mission. The heavily damaged plane and crew were relentlessly attacked by flak and German fighters, and crashed into a field in the middle of a German division guarding the area around Jabbele. The entire crew was captured or killed except for Sundlun. He hid in "plain sight" face down in a row of crops. A local family along with courageous Catholic priests and French Resistance fighters sheltered him and provided fake identity papers. For over six months, Sundlun "borrowed" more than 100 bicycles from unsuspecting shoppers to get around Belgium and France. Sundlun eventually fled to occupied France where he joined the Resistance and assisted them in their fight against the Nazis. He was then smuggled into neutral Switzerland where he spied for the OSS, the precursor to the CIA. This amazing hero went on to become the 71st Governor of Rhode Island between 1991 and 1995. Sundlun was Rhode Island's second Jewish governor and the only Jewish governor in the United States during his two terms. In addition to politics, Sundlun had a varied career as corporate executive, federal attorney, practicing lawyer, and university lecturer. This event is free to members, $3 for guests. Cake and coffee will be served. Please notify Marilyn Forhane, YCC's Sunshine Board Member, at (951) 845-9455 (mfor18@gmail.com) if you know anyone who should receive a get well or sympathy card.
