38 | OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2022 | 2022 – what a year! Two wonderful parties put together by club social director Laura Carlson and her mighty team of many hard- working volunteers and 63 sails through Oct. 31 (a whopping record) put together by Fleet Captain Charlie Cappello and his skilled team of Captains and Mates. We have more sails scheduled in November. Sails have included our standard afternoon sail on a Harbor Island Yacht Club Catalina 290; afternoon sails on larger sailboats to accommodate larger crews; sunset sails and sunset dinner sails when the Captain actually sails the boat to restaurant dockside, returning later to Harbor Island, sometimes slowing to watch the beer can races. Our Fleet Captain has even organized evening sails including sail up dockside dinner at The Ketch restaurant followed by sailing to Rady Shell for a concert while at anchor. We enjoyed days with little wind and with too much wind. We have had days of sailing in the bay and other days riding over sometimes mighty ocean swells. We raced ahead of fog, and we sailed alongside submarines. All in all, it has been a magnificent year with every club member having the opportunity to sail one or more times. Our second party – a semi-formal event entitled "Starry Nights" was attended by 117 sailors and friends. The event was initiated with a brief business portion with the club's outgoing Commodore Tom Murphy introducing the club's new Board of Directors for the 2023 season. Prime ribs, mashed potatoes, carrots, salad and cheesecake filled our tummies. The air was punctuated by a DJ playing all types of dance music and even a few slow songs for cuddling. The new Board's goal is to continue expanding the happiness quotient for the club's members with exciting sails and other events. The Board hopes to have a membership meeting in January or early February 2023 to talk about what's in store and to seek fresh ideas. Of course, we are always looking for our members to be involved in the club. There are many opportunities to help out as volunteers. By the time you read this last 2022 Newsletter, the sailing season will be over. While a sail or two might be scheduled in December, it is the Board's intention to hit the pause button until after the holidays. May our members and neighbors and their families have a joyous holiday season with family and friends and may the new year bring health and happiness to all. Fair winds and following seas to all.
