40 | OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2022 | Swim & Wellness Club Our November meeting was an early holiday celebration. Swim & Wellness (S & W) Club members gathered for a light supper and some holiday cheer. We also celebrated President Robin Bleeker's birthday. Hope we helped make your day a special one, Robin! Member Spotlight: Meet club member Mike Guillory. Born and raised in New Orleans, Mike got his law degree from Tulane University. After working for a big firm for four years, he realized that wasn't the path for him. He joined the Air Force and became a legal advisor in Special Operations. His job was to make sure our military remained in compliance with the laws of war. He had a hotline to the White House operations room! After 27 years in the USAF, he and wife Annette retired in Florida. Then Mike went back to school for a degree in Human Physiology and Kinesiology from the University of Florida. His focus was the study of neuroplasticity - ways to keep brain cells vibrant and growing in aging populations, through exercise and nutrition. Learning new movements as you age actually increases the number of brain cells you have as well as your brain power. Mike says we shouldn't worry about just "living longer" but need to think about "living WELL longer." While at the U of F, Mike had the opportunity to work with athletes and coaches, especially the swim team. An internship at the local National University provided the impetus for Mike and Annette's move to So Cal. They were attracted to OHCC's beautiful pool and golf course. In addition to being a devoted swimmer, Mike also plays golf and is on Board of the Golf Club. He was drawn to the S & W club for our focus on wellness. Mark your calendars for our next member meeting. We'll gather on Palm Court (weather permitting) on Thurs., Jan. 19 from 1:30-3 pm. We're working on a program with a wellness focus. Stay tuned! This is a great time to renew your club membership or join the club for the first time. If you join now, your membership will be good through all of 2023 for just $10. Drop off a check made out to the OHCC Swim & Wellness club at the Clubhouse. Be sure to include your name, address, phone and email. You can also pay your membership fee at Do Dues Day on Jan. 14. Being a S & W club member gives you a front row seat to all things POOL related, as well as learning about wellness topics in our age group. Our club offers FREE swimming lessons! Instruction is tailored to the individual and can range from teaching folks who are water- phobic to those with advanced skills. Prefer a female instructor? We have those. Feel more comfortable with a male teacher? We have those, too. Instructors are club members who offer this great service for free. Contact Ken Krueger at k2krueger@yahoo.com for more information. Club member and swimmer Mike Guillory
