Make way for 2023! Last January, we identified Numerology as the esoteric study of numbers. This year — 2023 — adds up to a 7 and means we should look inward at ourselves. Whether we believe in these numbers or not, this is a good time to focus on personal goals and achievements. Each of us will determine what we want to accomplish and how to do it. Making New Year's resolutions can be a good way to start. This tradition goes back to ancient times — in 2000 BC, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year during a 12-day festival, starting with the vernal equinox (when day and night are of equal length). One common resolution was the returning of borrowed farm equipment which makes sense for an agriculturally- based society. The Romans continued the tradition. They would offer sacrifices to JANUS and make promises of good behavior for the year ahead. A Boston newspaper from 1813 featured the first recorded use of the phrase, "New Year's resolution." In the United States, New Year's resolutions are still a tradition, but the type of resolutions has changed. In the early 1900s, they were more religious or spiritual in nature. Over the years, resolutions have migrated from denying physical indulgences to general self- improvement, like losing weight. In 1947, from the Gallup Poll, the top five resolutions were as follows: 1. Improve my disposition, be more understanding, control my temper. 2. Improve my character, live a better life. 3. Stop smoking, smoke less. 4. Save more money. 5. Stop drinking, drink less. Last year, the top five were: 1. Lose weight. 2. Get organized. 3. Spend less, save more. 4. Enjoy life to the fullest. 5. Stay fit and healthy. This year, we will celebrate our 20th year of incorporation as K. Hovnanian's Four Seasons at Hemet Community Association, Inc. Living in an HOA provides a unique set of opportunities. This is a good time to look at several ways to get the most out of our HOA: 1. Take a close look at the Rules and Regulations, as well as the Architectural Guidelines. Most problems can be avoided by living within these documents' tenets. If you have questions, the Board and Management are here to help. 2. Try to be a good neighbor. Good communication between neighbors is always a good idea. 3. Get out and enjoy everything Four Seasons has to offer. Your dues help to maintain our landscape and amenities which benefit all of us. This will likely improve your sense of community and enhance your living experience. 4. Actively participate and volunteer. There are numerous clubs and committees that welcome new members. Attend a Board meeting to stay current on the issues that affect all of us. This time of year we can enjoy the beauty of the snow on our mountains as we avoid the need for snow blowers and snow shovels. We are fortunate to live where it's possible to ski in the mountains, go to the beach, and visit the desert. The winter months can help reinvigorate us after the hectic and busy holiday season. This is a good time to plan our activities and what we will accomplish this year. "Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365- page book. Write a good one!" ~ Brad Paisley "It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves" ~ William Shakespeare We wish you a safe, healthy, and happy new year.
