14 | OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2023 | Ballroom Dance Our January dance will be on Fri., Jan. 13 in Abravanel Hall. Music from 7 to 9 pm by a member DJ. Details will be forthcoming. A picture of the November dance accompanies this article. The weekly dance lessons will resume after Do-Dues Day. Details will be forthcoming. They are held each week on Wednesdays. Beginner lessons are at 2 pm and Intermediate lessons are at 3 pm in Abravanel Hall. The cost is $10 for both members and non-members. Pay at the door (no reservations required, just come). Carrie Kloss, a champion dancer, and professional instructor will provide the dance instruction. The dance she will be teaching will be Cha-Cha for both Beginners and Intermediates. Cha-Cha is a fun dance that originated in Cuba and evolved from a slow version of Cuban Mambo. It became very popular in the United States in the mid-1950s. It has been described as an "exuberant dance that will get your heart pumping and put a smile on your face." Cha-Cha has become one of the most popular Latin dances in the world. It is a popular dance for lots of formal occasions like weddings and other social gatherings. It can also be a competitive ballroom dance and can often be seen in performances such as Dancing with the Stars. The Practice Parties will resume after we resume lessons in 2023. They are held in Abravanel Hall from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Experienced OHCC dancers review Wednesday's lessons and provide help upon request. You can practice your dancing to a variety of ballroom music. The party is FREE, just drop in. These parties are open to all residents of OHCC and guests of members. The annual membership dues for the Ballroom Dance Club are $10 per person. With this membership you will receive regular emails describing club activities as well as discounts for dances and lessons. To join, just drop your check off at the front desk. Indicate your email address(s) on the check. On Jan.14, the Dance Troupe will join many other clubs vying for your attention at Do Dues Day. Why pick the Dance Troupe? First, dancing keeps you young, both physically and mentally. According to researchers at Harvard, dance helps reduce stress, increases levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin, and helps develop new neural connections, especially in regions involved in executive function, long-term memory, and spatial recognition. And the workouts we get at each class keep our bodies strong. Second, dancing is fun! Our teachers keep the classes fun, and our fellow dancers are friendly. We have many experienced dancers who are always willing to help the newer ones. We offer a variety of dance classes, including jazz, tap, Hawaiian, ballet and belly dancing. Third, you will get the opportunity to wear beautiful costumes and perform for our community. In 2023, we will be learning new skills, making new friends and strengthening our troupe's esprit de corps. We are starting to learn new dances for our next performance which will be performed in the spring, 2024. We are getting wild in the Wild, Wild West! It is the perfect time for you to join us in one or more of our classes. You can learn the elements of dance in a fun and easy atmosphere. If you do not see us on Do Dues Day and are interested in tap or jazz, please contact us at ohccdancetroupe@gmail.com. If you are interested in Hawaiian dancing, please contact Valerie Thompson at valgene2@cox.net. If you are interested in belly dancing, please contact Sharon Lair at (760) 822-2670. And to join our new ballet class, please contact Nancy Trimino at ntmauistyle@aol.com Ocean Hills Dance Troupe
