Art Lovers As residents here in Oceanside, we feel especially fortunate to begin the new year, 2023, in our wonderful OHCC. We will soon be installing a new exhibit in the Art Studio featuring the works of beginning painters as well as those who took the art classes previously offered by resident artists/instructors Cindi DeWeese and Shellie Bean. How great that these ladies take the time to teach and encourage others! Please call them for more information about future classes. Thank you to the artists who recently showed their beautiful paintings. And, as always, we are on the lookout for you artistic people who would like to participate in a future display. Please call Lainy Vinikow or Judy Harris. 26 | OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2023 | Art Room The highlight of our year was our Holiday Luncheon held at the Shadowridge Golf Club on Dec. 6. A delicious lunch with complimentary champagne, guests mingling and socializing and an illuminating slide presentation by Robin Douglas of the Oceanside Museum of Art set the tone for the beginning of a perfect Holiday Season. After installation of our Officers for 2023, Susan Pick, President; Nancy Klaphaak, Vice President; Sally Booth, Secretary and Angie Babino, Treasurer, Robin stated the theme of her presentation as "A Wealth of Art Museums in Southern California." Among the cities she featured were La Jolla's Museum of Contemporary Arts San Diego, Oceanside's OMA, Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach and the spectacular new Orange County Museum of Art designed by prize- winning architect Thom Mayne. The Orange County Museum of Art is a modern and contemporary art museum located on the campus of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, California. The museum was founded in 1962 as the Balboa Pavilion Gallery by 13 women who rented space in the Balboa Pavilion building in order to exhibit modern and contemporary art. After many relocations and expansions, it reopened in October of 2022 to critical raves. Santa Ana boasts the Bowers Museum now featuring the world of fantasy couture art by Guo Pei which we plan to visit in January. Our group has toured the Norton Simon Gallery in Pasadena with its stunning art and beautiful gardens. Other art venues Douglas mentioned around Los Angeles were the Getty Center, the Broad and Los Angeles County Museum of Art which is undergoing a massive multi-million-dollar renovation. At each of these locations Robin Douglas mentioned several points of interest and dining adventures that are offered in these cities. We are indeed very fortunate to have so many noteworthy art venues to visit within a short distance. As she said, "Art opens your mind and makes you live longer." As we begin a new year, we want to thank our retiring Board Members for their devoted service to our club and our best wishes in their future endeavors at OHCC. They are Pamela Colton, Vicki Greene, Karen Hastings, Patti Rice and Joan Westlake. In addition to our Officers our new and returning Directors, Ronnie Duberstein, Selma Leighton, Susan Lesser, Rita Montjoy, Louise Peterson and Hal Stephens are eagerly planning exciting trips and speakers for 2023. We wish you all a very happy, healthy and joyful new year. Classes are on Tuesdays 12:30 to 3 pm and on Thursdays 10 am to 12:30 pm. For info, email me at jo.linda.marr@gmail.com. stained Glass
