Yiddish
Club
As the shimmering holiday lights begin to gently fade, and the new
year is upon us, I am taking the time to reflect on my tenure as the
Yiddish Club president. Although no longer president in 2023, I do
plan to continue on as a Board member!
By the time this article is read, the Chanukah luncheon will have
passed, but the camaraderie, the delicious deli food, and the beautiful
voices of the San Diego Jewish Men's Choir remains a lasting memory.
I have grown, improved and changed in so many ways: My
leadership skills, my computer skills, and my social skills have
definitely been enhanced. I have increased my knowledge of
Yiddish and Jewish culture and have so many of you to thank for
this transition. My partner, Don Kent, has been my devoted "right
hand man" and always at my side on this journey. I have been guided,
mentored, befriended and applauded by so many! Along the way, I
have been blessed with deep, warm friendships which I will continue
to cherish.
This New Year for the Yiddish Club will bring Carole Silverman as
President, Harv Jaffe as Vice President, and Katherine Backman as
Secretary. Arnie Wallins will continue as Treasurer.
The present Board has given me much needed support: Don Kent,
Lainy Vinikow, Carole Silverman, Batia and Itamar Cagan, Laraine
Steinman, Harv Jaffe, Katherine Backman, Arnie Wallins, and Debbie
Garey. A heartfelt thank you to all of you! In addition, several
members have expressed a sincere interest in joining the Yiddish
Club Board next year!
Sura Katz has started a group within our membership who would
like to learn more about Yiddish culture and are eager to learn the
language. Mazel tov! How exciting!
If you are interested, please contact Sura.
The Board has recently decided that, in order to defray the cost of
upcoming programs and luncheons, dues will be slightly increased in
2023 to $12. Dues paid by Dec. 31 will still be $10 for the upcoming
year.
Please note that you do not have to be Jewish, or speak Yiddish to
become a member of our Club. Also worth mentioning is that our
monthly Board meetings are open to any members wishing to attend.
We look forward to a happy, healthy, productive, informative, and
entertaining year for the Yiddish Club in 2023! ~ Elaine Massei,
President
