40 | OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2023 | Swim & Wellness Club Mark your calendars for our next meeting Thurs., Jan. 19 from 1 to 2:30 pm on Palm Court. We will have a short business meeting, followed by a presentation from Rheumatologist Dr. Ami Ben-Artzi. Dr. B is a staff member at both Scripps LaJolla and Cedars Sinai. He is in private practice in Beverly Hills and recently expanded with an office in Del Mar. Rheumatology encompasses autoimmune diseases, as well as arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia and others. Dr. B recently attended an intensive conference with Rheumatologists from all over the world. He is excited to share new developments in the field and discuss some of the latest research. Don't miss this one! Do Dues Day is right around the corner, Sat., Jan. 14th. Come to the Clubhouse to join any of OHCC's 37 social clubs, especially the Swim & Wellness club. Look for S & W's table and learn all about our club and what we offer. Members, do you have experience in maintaining a website? Your club is looking for someone to help out with the Swim & Wellness club page on the OHCC website. This job wouldn't take much time if you know what you're doing! Please contact Robin Bleeker to get more information about what is involved. Your officers need help! Member Spotlight - Meet club member Carol Hirsch. Many of our members join the club because they have a pool connection. Carol is a great example of someone who joined for the Wellness portion of our mission. Carol's interest in a healthy lifestyle began as a young woman when her father had cancer. He changed his diet which resulted in about 10 extra years of life. This greatly influenced Carol. Then at age 40, Carol was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Since then, she has sought relief and answers through medication plus lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. Carol was born and raised in Chicago, where she met husband David. Next, they moved to Tucson, where they lived for 20 years. However, one of the symptoms of fibromyalgia is a sensitivity to hot and cold… and Tucson was way too hot for Carol. Plus, she always dreamed of living in California! So, seven years ago, the Hirsch's made the move and landed in OHCC. They have a daughter in Chicago and a son in Phoenix, plus three teenage granddaughters. Carol has been past president of the Yiddish club and was also involved in backstage work with the Theatre Arts club. She is S & W's food chairperson for special events - thank you, Carol! She's an avid Mah Jongg player and a SERT member. Carol and David enjoy playing board games and entertaining. And they love visiting the grandkids!
