| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2023 | 29 Judgment of Paris The Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, which became known as the "Judgment of Paris," was organized by British wine merchant Steven Spurrier and his colleague Patricia Gallagher. Spurrier had tasted wines from Napa Valley and felt like what he tasted there was the equal of wines anywhere. At the time, no one thought any wine could compete with French wine. The competition was held on May 24, 1976, at the InterContinental Hotel in central Paris. The whites were tasted in the morning and the reds were judged in the afternoon. This was a blind taste test – the judges were unaware of which wines they were tasting. They voted on a 20-point scale for each wine. The judges were nine well-known and respected judges from France, none from California. They tasted the best Burgundy whites and California Chardonnay wines in the morning and assigned their scores. In the afternoon, the judges tasted the best Bordeaux reds and California Cabernet Sauvignons. Results were as follows: California Chardonnays vs. Burgundy Chardonnays 1. 132 Chateau Montelena 1973 USA 2. 126.5 Meursault Charmes Roulot 1973 France 3. 121 Chalone Vineyard 1974 USA 4. 104 Spring Mountain Vineyard 1973 USA 5. 101 Beaune Clos des Mouches Joseph Drouhin 1973 France California Cabernet Sauvignon vs. Bordeaux 1. 127.5 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars 1973 USA 2. 126 Château Mouton-Rothschild 1970 France 3. 125.5 Château Haut-Brion 1970 France 4. 122 Château Montrose 1970 France 5. 105.5 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello 1971 USA The event organizer had invited several journalists to the event but only one attended - George Taber of Time Magazine. The article Mr. Taber published the following week about the results of the event sent shock waves throughout the international wine world. The winning white wine was made by Miljenko "Mike" Grgich at Chateau Montelena. On July 4, 1977, Mike and Austin Hills broke ground for their new winery, Grgich Hills Estate, in Rutherford, California, Napa Valley. The Travel Club Board is very excited about our trips and events that are planned for this year! Complete information about each of our following trips is available in the Clubhouse. Feb. 8: We are off to Orange County to enjoy guided tours of two gems in the area - The Segerstrom Center for the Arts and the Guo Pei Exhibition at the Bowers Museum. We start with a guided tour of the Segerstrom Hall, which opened on Sept. 29, 1986, and was one of the nation's most innovative and technically advanced centers for the performing arts. The Guo Pei Exhibition of her incredibly intricate, handmade designs was a Travel Club hit several years ago. March 23: Join us for our trip with a guide to visit Sights around San Diego. Our first stop is Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial and Cross, which sits atop an 822-foot hill with fantastic ocean views. After lunch, we'll tour the incredible San Diego Central Library, which is a nine-story structure topped by an iconic steel-and- mesh lattice dome over a two-story rare-book reading room. Our final destination is the Barrio Logan, which is home to the largest collection of Chicano murals anywhere. Aug. 1: We're off to see the fabulous Pageant of The Masters, a Travel Club favorite destination! Presented in an outdoor amphitheater with an orchestra and live narration and intricate sets, this ninety-minute show presents "living pictures" re-creating classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. Oct. 13 – 18: We're traveling with the AFC tour company to New Mexico to the Annual Balloon Festival to see over 100 hot air balloons from around the world lift off to become multicolored orbs dancing in the morning. 23 OHCC residents have already signed up for this fantastic trip!
