| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2023 | 11 Finally, It's March Again Many of you may remember Fergus O'Leary the Leprechaun, better known as Fergie, who took up residency in our OHCC Library in 2021. He was hiding among the books and sleeping in the drawers under the paper clips and post-its. Once the Clubhouse reopened, I discovered him one Sunday evening sitting by the fireplace enjoying a book. The following year he was still around, hiding and singing some of his favorite Irish songs. He was a real trickster, sometimes disappearing for weeks at a time. He refused to show himself to me unless I took an oath that I believed in Leprechauns, and that I would never capture him so he could keep his pot of gold. I agreed and we became immediate friends. Several days ago, he appeared to me again sitting by the same fireplace reading aloud O'Brien's Book of Irish Fairy Tales and Legends. He explained how he loved the warmth of the room, the smell of the books housed there, and the volumes of exciting literature. He could hardly contain himself as he blurted out the news he had gathered. He admitted that he had indeed played a few tricks on Do Dues Day by enticing folks to wander into the library by playing "Catch me if you can." He was able to attract 47 new members who discovered the magic of our library and signed up, which brought our new total to 257 members for 2023. He wanted to thank you for your continued support and welcomed all the new members. He explained that people could still join by paying their dues at the Clubhouse front desk by simply leaving a check for $15 made out to OHCC Library which covers the entire family. Fergie continued singing and dancing the Jig for the crowd gathered around him, and then explained that we have a full slate of volunteers, but there is a wait list in the Library to sign up anyone who wants to be a part of this fun group in the future. He talked about the open shelves where anyone can take a book without an official check- out, and return it by simply dropping it in the return box slot at the circulation desk. He finally reminded us that the reserved books MUST be checked out by a librarian, and pointed to the sign with Library hours when staff members would be available. He yawned, tired from all the attention, took a final bow, welcomed the applause from his audience and disappeared. Not to worry, he is still around. You just need to be one of the many who believe. Your Master Board Landscape Committee will be focusing increased attention on the back slopes and behind some residents homes. Now, a proposal from the Save the Monarch Butterfly Club provides a way to beautify some of the spaces and make a major contribution to the environment. This will be done with mutual agreements with residents. Using a palette of 40 native plants that the SMB club has developed to attract and support the Western Monarchs and other butterflies and bees. The plants are attractive, drought-resistant and require little maintenance. They will support a much larger butterfly population. This initiative is also consistent with another environmental project sponsored by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors which is trying to increase the number of native plants in the county. Many new butterflies came to OHCC last year after the opening of our butterfly sanctuary; but that space alone is not sufficient to support further growth. This creative use of our land will give OHCC a beautiful and larger butterfly oasis. Let's imagine OHCC as the "Field of Dreams." Landscape Committee
