| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2023 | 27 Music Lovers Hello everyone. There's a new club in town. It's the Music Lovers Club and we literally started our club right before Do Dues Day. We threw a tablecloth over the banquet table, put up a couple of table signs and hung some G clefs and musical notes on the wall. We weren't even on the club listings that people picked up at the desk but luckily 40 + Music Lovers found their way to our table anyway. Since then, we have up to 70+ members and are growing. We're so happy that people have joined our cause and decided that there is a need for more music in this world and most especially at OHCC. We hit the ground running and have since gotten volunteers for most of our board and have begun the business of gathering musical talent for not only our club, but the entire community to enjoy... Two weeks ago, we began our new Coffee House Mondays music offerings beginning with a jazz guitar duo called Twin Picks. Every week Music Lovers will schedule music in the clubhouse lobby from 9:30 to 11:30 am so folks can come down and enjoy some spruced up coffee and treats provided by our club while they listen to some coffee house style music. Sweet. We've gotten some great feedback so far and we've got more music groups in the wings waiting to show off their style, and talents. It's such a pleasure to have people come out to enjoy something that's brand new and have them love it. Thanks Ocean Hills. But wait, there's more. The Villagers Group that formed during Covid from the streets of Corfu, has joined the Music Lovers club to continue their FREE concerts for ALL OF OHCC once a month. You can come dance the night away, (between 6 and 8 pm) every third Friday of the month. The band performs in Abravanel Hall through the cold weather and will be moving out to the Palm Court in April for their afternoon concerts. Our club is hoping to sync up with the dance clubs and invite their members to join the Villagers and demo/ teach a few dances for those who want to get on the dance floor more often. More things to look forward to that we are raring to get up and running: Performances by group member musicians for Recreation Department functions; Karaoke Nights, open to the entire community (when we get our system and when we can get the hall. LOL.); A Musical Variety Show coming in the fall; (Look for news about auditions coming up in the near future.); trips to local concerts and music events; Christmas caroling; teaming up with clubs who are looking for music at their events; and guest performers and speakers at our general club meetings. We looked at what OHCC had for musical entertainment and what it might be missing and decided to fill in the gaps. Come hear the music. Come join the fun. Whether you're a singer, a musician, or you just plain love music, there's a place for you in Music Lovers. Start spreading the news. ~ Debbie Cea Yiddish Club Recently a member of The Yiddish Club passed away. Sometimes, after the funeral, the family of the deceased, "Sit Shivah." This is a time of mourning for their loved ones. It involves saying prayers with a rabbi, or someone leading prayers. In order for saying the prayers, there needs to be at least 10 Jewish people in attendance. The Orthodox Rabbis require the 10 people to be men, while Conservative or Reformed can have women and men. The family traditionally sits "Shivah" for seven days. Friends and family support the family by visiting & supporting them, many times, bringing food and desserts. If you feel comfortable, you can ask about the person who has passed. The family of the deceased asked The Yiddish Club to send out a message asking for men in the Yiddish Club to come to their home to be part of the "minyan." Many women also attended to support the family and help with the food, which was various desserts, fruit & other foods. When I looked around the home that evening, I was so proud and emotional to see many men and women from Ocean Hills there to help in any way they could. People were pouring into the house to be there for the family, many who probably didn't even know the deceased, but thought it was important to be there! Even though it was a very sad time, it was very heartwarming. It made me realize how fortunate we are to live in a community where we are there for each other in so many ways, whether it's for good things happening in our lives or a friends illness or needing a ride to a doctor, our friends are ready to help! Our next meeting will be on Monday evening April 17, in Abravanel Hall from 7 to 9 pm. We look forward to seeing you then. ~ Carole Silverman, President
