Men's Golf By Sam Currie, 951-461-0801 I know we need the rain, but from a golfing viewpoint, it certainly made a dent in our January golf play schedule! Of course, January is normally a quieter month for the CMGC anyway, allowing us to draw a breath after holding the year-end Pancake Breakfast and our annual Awards Dinner. January is also when we see a "changing of the guard" with regards to our CMGC Board personnel. In fact, we have two changes for the 2023 Board, with Greg Griffes taking over as Club Secretary and George Herrera as Membership Director. So, welcome to these new Directors: Greg Griffes and George Herrera We have a good variety of tournament formats lined up for this year, ranging from individual play to scrambles and shambles and three-club challenges—all good fun! Why not join us and become a member of the CMGC. Contact George Herrera at 760- 533-0350 for membership information. Happy spring! We survived another SoCal winter and are ready to head outside and welcome spring. Many of the pickleball lovers never took that winter break and played in the cold, wet mornings and windy afternoons. One of the variations of pickleball that is only played at The Colony is the "short court" game, which is perfect in these conditions. This version of pickleball demands concentration and control when striking the ball. In January, we held our first short court tournament. Ten Colony residents and 10 guests competed for several hours on a beautiful, sunny morning. Scott Ross (The Colony) and Nancy Ahern (Four Seasons) accumulated the most points. We also held two Colony tournaments, one in January and one in February. In each tournament, 20 residents gathered to compete for first place honors. In January, Amy Horlock Robinson placed first in the women's division; Rob Chandler and Tom McClure tied for first place in the men's division. Bruce Dalfonso, Scott Daniels and Kathy Lewis won straight victories in the games they played in February's competition. The tournaments are becoming more competitive and bringing out the best in the players. And, of course, fun is our first priority! If you would like to learn the basics of the game and join in the fun, please call me for free lessons. We would love to welcome you to the pickleball family.
