Jack & Jill By Dennis Murphy, 951-461-0457 Ladies Golf By Judy Lebovitz, 951-461-0065 The January tournament was played on a very soggy course requiring some careful maneuvering of golf carts to minimize the creation of muddy potholes. Fourteen foursomes braved the maze of standing water spots and soggy surfaces. Forty-eight golfers were vying for first place position in the "Regular Scramble" competition. This spirited event posted scores that were consistent with the difficulty of play and conditions faced and, in the end, it was a tight, competitive outcome at the top of the heap. Interestingly, a first-time J&J player, Dave Funston, managed to score in the top team position. When the tournament was over, the following posted winning positions for the contest: Winning Teams 1st: 47.240, Dave Funston, Denise Sturm, John and Pat Sparkenbach 2nd: 49.030, John McVeigh, Connie Vanderbyl, David and Donna MacLagan 3rd: 49.038, Charles Craven, Paula Thompson, Dan and Sheryl Beamish 4th 49.225, Rich Brown, Linda Peterson, Dennis Murphy and Sherry Roberts Closest to the Pin #5: Women, Vicky Cornille: 16'10" / Men, Larry Determan: 0'6"… Wow, that was close. #15: Women, Pat Caldera: 17'0" / Men, Rich Brown: 18'11" #16: Team #1-B Bruce Dalfonso, Joanne Perry, Bruce and Ann Hartwig: 5'4" We have a NEW Mr. & Ms. Jack and Jill for 2022 to carry us through the 2023 season. They are Joe Jaramillo and Barbara Crosdale. Congratulations to both of them. DARWIN AWARDS: A near coup occurred during the banquet as a renegade group of J&J golfers consisting of 2 Marines, 1 defecting J&J committee member and a wayward "Jill" in the rear of the banquet room attempted to derail the Award by attacking the ever- so-Humble MC/CEO for his admitted error in announcing the tee time "shot gun" start for the event. His integrity, transparency and honesty were being challenged by the few radical elements of the group assembled. A motion was placed on the floor to place the DARWIN squarely on the MC. A vote was then taken of those J&J golfers in attendance. It was soundly defeated, and our democratic principle wins out once again over tyranny. The award was then given to 16 golfers (3 teams) that failed to authenticate their official score card with appropriate signatures of the SCORER and the ATTESTED scorer thus disqualifying (DQ) them from the competition. Our next contest will be Thursday, March 9, and will be our "Random Draw" competition. As with all Jack & Jill events, you DO NOT have to be a member of either the Men's or Women's Golf Club's to play. Just pick up your sticks and join us for the fun and friendly competition, and I might add, possibly some rowdy banquets. See ya on the links! Our February lunch/meeting was well attended and lots of fun. All the tables were decorated for Valentine's Day and we celebrated three special birthdays… 75, 75 and 85! It was a delicious lunch and a really delicious birthday cake. The back nine ladies will be getting together soon for a meeting on the rules of golf as we have some members who are new to golf. We are still teeing off at 8:30 am through March and hoping the rain is over so the course will dry up. We have a great group of ladies who play either nine or 18 holes every Tuesday morning. Our lunch meetings are once a month. If you are interested in learning more about our group or joining us, please contact our membership chair, Peggy Clendenen at 951-696-2169. In the meantime, stay well and safe. We hope to see you on the links! | THE COLONY NEWS | MARCH 2023 | 37
