38 | THE COLONY NEWS | MARCH 2023 | FINALLY! After two months of rain-outs, Racquet Club members awoke to a perfect day for the Paddle Tennis Tournament. Thanks to Kris Smith who provided our morning goodies and congratulations to our winners, Judy Brackin and Rob Chandler. You two are awesome competitors. The February dinner meeting was hosted by Jeanne Bender and Karen Nichols. Glenn Sailor arranged for a bit of a Valentine's treat in the form of line dancing lessons after dinner. Quite a few members gave it a try, and it is entirely possible that some actually learned the steps. A tribute to the excellent instructor, Loretta Schlosser, along with her helpers Karen Bebee and Mike Harr. Our next dinner will be held on Saturday, March 11, with entertainment performed by a professional magician. Details coming, don't miss it! For those of you who would like to learn Paddle Tennis, we are planning on having a clinic on Thursday, May 11. Please call Ellen Micheli, 951-741-5372, or Karen Nichols, 619-550-8194, to reserve a spot in the clinic or if you wish to get out and try the game at any time. For tennis lessons, call John Knitter at 951-805-2456. He will be happy to help you brush up your game or learn how to play. The Ladies potluck lunches are always held on the second Wednesday of each month. Just for fun, paddle tournaments are played on the first Friday morning of each month. Dues to join are being collected now, just $5 per year to belong to this group as a player or as a social member. Racquet Club By Karen Nichols, 619-550-8194 The Ping Pong Club is going strong, with many regulars showing off their skills. Meet one of our regular players, Lauren Tyson. Lauren has lived in The Colony for 15 months. Over the years, she has lived in many places and is pleased to feel truly at home here. She loves the feeling of community and the many good people who live here and who offer their friendship and talents. Why Ping Pong? Lauren says she originally joined for exercise, and it's one sport she feels she is reasonably good at. Her dad was a life-long golf enthusiast and a pro back in the 50s. When she is playing ping pong, she thinks about him and is inspired to get better at the game. She loves the fact that the Ping Pong Club is well organized, offers fun for all levels of play, and that everyone is kind and supportive. It is a place you can "Let your hair down and be silly if you want. Just be yourself." In addition to Ping Pong, Lauren participates in the monthly watercolor class, uses the treadmill in the fitness center, and likes chair aerobics. When she is not busy enjoying The Colony lifestyle, she is working on her business as a Liquor License Consultant. She likes to read, write (she just finished a book on how bar owners can stay out of legal trouble), do family history research, watch movies, meet up with family and friends, and attend concerts and plays. Come meet Lauren in person and check out the Ping Pong Club! We meet Wednesdays from 4 to 6 pm and Fridays from 3 to 6 pm in the Annex. No experience or equipment is needed.
