36 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2023 | Village Vets We had a great March meeting with speaker Tommy Moore, Community Outreach Representative and active-duty Navy Chief. He talked about the great work at the Shelter to Soldier organization, helping shelter dogs as well as post 9/11 combat vets needing specially trained service dogs. Tommy's "Canine Ambassador" demonstration was also well received. Our next meeting on May 25 will be a free hot dog luncheon, just for our paid members. It starts at 12 noon at the Clubhouse. The guest speaker will be Jim Desmond, a navy veteran, recent resident of OHCC, and our San Diego County Supervisor. I'm sure you won't want to miss this meeting, Jim Desmond, and the food. Please note the meeting time change from our normal starting time. If you haven't joined this year, our dues are still $10 per person and will be accepted at the Clubhouse front desk. Federal laws have recently been changed, increasing the benefits to veteran surviving spouses and family members. A VA Survivors Pension offers monthly payments to qualified surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children of wartime veterans who meet certain income and net worth limits set by Congress. Find out if you qualify and how to apply by contacting the local VA office. You may be eligible for this benefit if you haven't remarried after the veteran's death, and if the deceased veteran didn't receive a dishonorable discharge and their service meets at least one of these requirements. At least one of these must be true: • The Veteran entered active duty on or before Sept. 7, 1980, and served at least 90 days on active military service, with at least one day during a covered wartime period, or • The Veteran entered active duty after Sept. 7, 1980, and served at least 24 months or the full period for which they were called or ordered to active duty (with some exceptions), with at least 1 day during a covered wartime period or • The Veteran was an officer and started on active duty after Oct. 16, 1981, and hadn't previously served on active duty for at least 24 months. When you need a new flag or holder, please contact Bob Saint Laurent at (336) 509-8788. He can help. We only ask for a donation to cover our costs. Tommy Moore and his Canine Ambassador "Moose"
