48 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2023 | Racquet Club The most common buzz at the courts over the last two months has been whose phone app or favorite TV weather forecaster was best at predicting whether pickleball could be played the following day. The prolonged cold — unusual for San Diego — didn't deter players, but the incessant rains and swirling winds sure did. Nonetheless, when the sun came out long enough to dry the courts – especially when the golf course remained closed – hordes descended at the Clubhouse and Pavilion courts to get in some much-needed exercise. With Daylight Savings Time and warmer weather going forward, activity at the courts will start picking up steam. Sat., April 1 (no fooling!) kicks off the first of the annual pickleball tournaments with what will surely be a hotly contested men's doubles competition featuring advanced, intermediate, and novice players. Morning play will culminate with division finals at the Pavilion courts in the early afternoon. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to take in the action and support friends and neighbors. The Rec Department recently invested in more plastic chairs to allow for additional sideline seating. Come on down! You'll enjoy it! The first Saturday of the month pickleball "Play & Stay" is gaining traction by providing the opportunity for players of different levels to mix it up on the courts: novice and low intermediate players get together at the Pavilion while more competitive intermediates can "play up" at the Clubhouse courts. The "members only" juice bar on the croquet lawn later in the morning brings everyone together to socialize and to learn how to play corn hole. The latter is a skill that will come in handy for some late summer fun leading up to the Racquet Club's Game Day II in early October. The first of two general meetings for the Racquet Club are Thurs., April 6 at 4 pm in Abravanel Hall. Plan to attend to learn more about coming events at the courts. Prospective members welcome. Club members will receive an email reminder. Free beginner pickleball lessons for all residents are available each month. Contact the help desk at ohrchelp@gmail.com to sign up and get the details. Check out our website at ohccracquetclub.org. Golf Club The first Guys and Dolls Tournament of the year, held on Sat., Feb. 18, hosted a full slate of contestants, divided into five flights. Flight One winners were the Deutmans and Easts. Flight Two winners were Colson, Dergen, Shoenhard and Shall. Flight Three winners were the Damerons, Hafner, and La Gregs. Flight Four winners were the Geissers and Spectors. And Flight Five winners were Ackerman, Chamberlin, Quandt and Wagner. Each foursome was awarded $52. Magic Circle winners were Darlene Kelch, Sandy Geisser, Bill Crosby, Bruce Barnum, Bruce Brady, Donald Russell, Gred Cies, and Joe Moore, each receiving $5 for their magical shots. Congratulations to these exceptional golfers! Coming up are The Guys and Dolls Tournament on Sat., April 15 and the first Touring Amateurs tournament of the year on Mon., April 17 at Oaks North. Hope to see you at these great events. And let this photo be a warning to those who try to retrieve their golf ball from our soon to be open pond on our course. Beware the gator!
