| OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2023 | 49 Well, by time you read this, the club will have completed a bunch of sails. It is possible a few were canceled or postponed due to the inclement late winter weather we have been experiencing. Next month we will be able to report on the first month of cycle one sails. In the meantime, the sailing club has not been quiet. In February, the club resumed full operations except for sailing. Board meetings and Captains and Mates meetings resumed in full force with the purpose of planning the best year ever for the club. With 20 sails scheduled for March and April, 2023 is off to a record start for the club. Our Fleet Captain working with one of our club Captains, Dave Ramgren, has offered members their first classroom course in February covering sailing, navigation, rights of way and sailboat basics. A second classroom program on points of sail and actual sailing technique was offered in March. More classroom offerings will be announced in future months and attendees will have the chance to put what they learned in the classroom to test their skills on the water. We hope that the classwork and opportunities to participate on the water invigorate our members' interest in actively participating in sailing the boats. Ocean Hills Sailing Club also had its first general meeting for the membership. Nearly 100 of the club's 210 members attended the Feb. 28 event. The meeting was opened by the club's Commodore, Skip Maniscalco, who introduced the club's officers, social director, membership chair, ship's store chair and its web site manager. Skip went on to introduce all the Captains and Mates, reminding the attendees of the commitment and dedication of all who so generously give of the time and experience to serve the club. Following opening remarks, our club's Social Director, Laura Carlson spoke of the two themed dinner/dance parties that are planned. She reminded everyone to earmark the dates in their calendars. Laura was followed by our Fleet Captain, Charlie Cappello, who spoke in greater detail about the sailing plan for 2023, our club classroom training courses and the many different themes of our day sails, e.g., calm day sails, ocean sails, Coronado Cays sails, Rady Shell concert sails, dock and dine sails and others. Charlie also spoke about our proposed July or September regatta being spearheaded by Forrest Newberg with five or more sailboats racing on a prescribed course and followed by a magnificent sunset awards dinner at Southwest Yacht Club. More information on the regatta will follow as detailed plans are developed. Of course, everyone enjoyed the delicious repast of sandwiches, veggies, chips, cookies and beverages prepared for everyone by our Social Director, Laura. Those of you who are not, but would like to be members can contact Julie Pashkowsky, the sailing club's Membership Chair, to get signed up. Fair winds and following seas to everyone. Sailing Club
