Birding CLUB
The Four Seasons Birding Club is having to make some big changes.
Steve Edelman, who led the group for years with expertise and
enthusiasm, has moved out of state. He leaves such big shoes to fill that
several people will step up to keep the group running. Thankfully, Gerrie
Karczynski, an accomplished birder and photographer, will be the leader,
and many knowledgeable members will help with bird identification on
our walks and with keeping our tally of sightings.
The club usually meets at 8 am on the first Saturday of each month at
the entrance to trail A by The Lodge parking lot. We often take leisurely
walks on trails A and B, stopping to log what we see and hear. Our most
recent walk on April 1 was no April Fool's joke. We had spectacular
sunny weather, blue skies and wispy white clouds that we appreciated
after the frequent rains of the last month. The sycamores and arroyo
willows were still not fully leafed, so that gave us an easier view of the
birds we heard. We were able to zero in on 24 species, including the
Anna's Hummingbirds and spotted towhees who like to hang out on
our trails, and we got what may be our last look at the Yellow Rumped
Warblers and American Robins who will be leaving us soon on their
migratory travels. We especially enjoyed the Robin's song:
He rocks in the treetops all day long
Hoppin' and a-boppin' and a-singin' his song
Rockin' robin, tweet, tweedle-lee-dee
Come and join us for our next walk on Saturday, May 6. It's a great
way to get to know the animals and plants around us, the frequently-
seen birds, the shy ones, and some unusual bird visitors. For more
