FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2023 43 Classic Film Group On May 23 and June 6 at 6 pm in The Lodge Theater, we present the Hitchcock thriller Vertigo. This was the first movie to use computer graphics and you should see it from the beginning. A San Francisco police detective John "Scottie" Ferguson (James Stewart) discovered after a workplace incident that he is acrophobic which leads to severe vertigo. The severe fear of heights forces him to retire when a colleague falls to his death during a chase. Following his early retirement, John becomes obsessed with two women which troubles his long time friend and former fiancée, Midge Wood (Barbara Bel Geddes). The first object of his obsession is wealthy and elegant platinum blonde Madeleine Elster, the wife of his college acquaintance Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore), who hires John to follow her. John is drawn to Madeleine and her fixation with death. He unwittingly becomes a figure in a complex plot. The second woman is Judy Barton (Kim Novak), who John spots on the street one day. Judy is a working class girl and is the spitting image of Madeleine. The initial question that John has is if there is some connection between Madeleine and Judy. He is determined to discover the truth behind it all. Note: The opening title sequence designed by Saul Bass in 1958 makes this the first movie to use computer graphics. An uncredited second unit cameraman, Irmin Roberts, invented the famous "zoom out and track in" shot to convey the sense of vertigo to the audience. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the proper name for the fear of height is "Acrophobia," whereas vertigo is "a sensation of whirling and loss of balance, associated particularly with looking down from a great height." ~ Paul Plamondon, 4seasonsmoviegroup@gmail.com The club has screenings on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. We screen films you won't find at the big Cineplexes: documentaries, indie films, foreign films and other little gems that don't get wide release. Our first screening for the month, on Sunday, May 14 at 6 pm, is the film Jerry and Marge Go Large (USA 2022, 1 hr. 36 min., English). Here is a brief description from Amazon.com: "When retiree Jerry Selbee discovers a mathematical loophole in the Massachusetts lottery, he and his wife Marge go on an exciting multi-million-dollar winning spree with the goal to revive their small Michigan town. But when a selfish college student cheats the system, Jerry must find a way to make the game fair for all. Inspired by a remarkable true story and featuring an all-star cast including Bryan Cranston, Annette Bening, and Rainn Wilson, Jerry and Marge Go Large proves that good deeds truly prevail." Our second screening for the month, on Sunday, May 28 at 6 pm, is the film Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down (USA 2022, 1 hr. 38 min., English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down tells the extraordinary story of former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords: her relentless fight to recover following an assassination attempt in 2011, and her new life as one of the most effective activists in the battle against gun violence. Featuring extensive filming of Gabby and her husband, astronaut- turned-Senator Mark Kelly; interviews with Barack Obama and other friends and colleagues; and exclusive access to stunning videos taken in the weeks following her near-death, this film is the story of a rising star transformed by gun violence, and a close-up portrait of the marriage that sustains her." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film. The Lodge Theater has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability.
