| LIFE IN SOLERA | MAY 2023 | 39 TENNIS ELBOW: Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is a painful condition that occurs when tendons in your elbow are overloaded, usually by repetitive motions of the wrist and arm. Despite its name, athletes aren't the only people who develop tennis elbow. People whose jobs feature the types of motions that can lead to tennis elbow include plumbers, painters, carpenters and butchers. The pain of tennis elbow occurs primarily where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to a bony bump on the outside of your elbow. Pain can also spread into your forearm and wrist. Rest and over-the-counter pain relievers often help relieve tennis elbow. If conservative treatments don't help or if symptoms are disabling, your doctor might suggest surgery. TREATMENT: Deep tissue massage to the forearm is a very effective method of easing tennis elbow and healing it much faster than rest alone. Deep tissue massage will enhance circulation and combining this with friction therapy to the tendons on the elbow joint, positive results are seen. Using kinesio tape for tennis elbow is an excellent treatment option for lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, which involves using kinesiology tape to reduce symptoms. Taping your elbow allows you to perform activities that would normally be painful by minimizing pain and changing how you move your arm. One of the most significant advantages of compression sleeves is their multifaceted benefits, especially for tennis elbow. From increased blood circulation to added support and relieving tension and pressure, there is a range of benefits tennis players may experience. A tennis elbow brace can provide you with comfort and support during the night. The brace can reduce pressure on the injured tendons. It works to reduce pain by keeping the forearm muscles from contracting fully. This can be ideal for individuals who clench their fists while they sleep. Limit inflammatory foods (such as processed foods and sugar) and any foods to which you know you're intolerant. Acidic foods contribute to arachidonic acid, which can prolong inflammation. With this in mind, try to limit the amount of tea, coffee, alcohol, and carbonated soft drinks you consume. ~ Shirley Ferguson TENNIS TITANS TENNIS ELBOW SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT This is the third in a series of five reviewing the five basic rules of pickleball. Last month we discussed when a ball is served, it is served crosscourt into your opponents' side. One thing a beginner sometimes struggles with is the rule about a ball bouncing. When a ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce once before returning. Subsequently, the serving team must let the returned ball bounce once on their side before returning also. In other words, the ball must bounce once on each side of the net. After that, volleying is allowed. To "volley" a ball means you can hit it before it bounces. Speaking of bouncing, a ball is only allowed to bounce once on each side. If it bounces more than once, it is a fault, just like in tennis. Next month, for rule #4, we'll discuss the "kitchen" and staying out of it. Pickleball is addictive. Almost everyone currently playing at Solera regularly had never played before. It truly is an easy game to learn and enjoy. For more information, feel free to contact either Sue Miller at (503) 702-4273 or Sandy Stearn at (951) 797-0991. We play Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday mornings. We begin around 8 am. Introduction to the sport is offered to all new players. Come hit the ball around a bit and see if this game is right for you. Chances are, it is! We have paddles to use if you don't have one. This sport is for active adults. Please wear court shoes, not jogging or walking shoes. PICKLEBALL PADDLERS
