| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2023 | 59 Hopefully, as you read this article, winter will be gone. It certainly was a remarkable winter, and I don't mean in a good way. I suspect the Bocce Board will have decided to forgo a Winter Tournament all together by the time you read this. That could add a week or two to the other three tournaments. Those who attended the lasagna dinner seemed to enjoy it. It was certainly different from our former pizza parties which are no more, since the kitchen no longer has the ovens to host a pizza party. All things move forward. The Spring Tournament began with a rocky start as well, but things are squaring around now. Fifty-one teams are signed up to play and a couple of new refs joined the group. Many of the teams are new to Bocce and it's good to see new faces and to welcome our stalwart veteran club members as well. Friends of Bocce All our early spring rain was good for the plants, animals, trees, but not necessarily for camping. For those who could not make the trip to Yuma, you missed a wonderful time. The first day everyone had to shed the long pants and jackets to enjoy the 87 degrees. The rest of the week was about the same except for the Wednesday when it seemed that the Banning weather followed us, with a two-hour downpour and winds that necessitated rolling up the awnings. As fast as it approached, it was gone. It was tough coming back to rain and cold temps. We had a Bocce Ball competition with almost all of the club members participating. It was a tough competition between 13 teams. Taking first place was Colin Pay, Rick McHerd, Dan Sumrall, and Joe Cross. Second place went to Rod Kemp, Steve Schwartz, Jim Ball, and Brenda Day, and third place went to Peter Popp, Bob Schive, Leon Fikse, and Steve Martin. Honorable mention is our 4th place team consisting of Robin Pay, Sally Swartz, Lyn Schive, and Phyllis Ramella. On Saturday night the group was challenged to a game of Family Feud officiated by our own Steve (Harvey) Martin. The competition was tight, as it was gals against the guys. The guys took first place, but not without a strong fight from the ladies taking second place. Thanks for a good time, Steve. We did find a couple that apparently decided to stay much longer than the six-month rental agreement, and no one has decided to get them to vacate the stop. Picture inset. Our Pahrump trip was April 23-28. The committee was there to meet and greet everyone as they arrived. There was a group gathering the evening of the first night, with dinner provided by the committee. Golf was at the Lake View Executive Golf Course. We want to wish our May Birthday members a fantastic birthday, especially since each of you may be able to celebrate it with warmer weather and hopefully no rain. They are Pam 5/16, Bill 5/13, Michele 5/29, Jan 5/17, and Phillip 5/27. Hope each of you have a great day. ~ Bob Schive
