| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2023 | 15 Line Dancers What do the experts say? A 2003 study in the New England Journal of Medicine by researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine discovered that dance can decidedly improve brain health. The study investigated the effect leisure activities had on the risk of dementia in the elderly. The researchers looked at the effects of 11 different types of physical activity, including cycling, golf, swimming and tennis, but found that the only one of the activities studies – dance – lowered participants' risk of dementia. According to researchers, dancing involves both a mental effort and a social interaction and that this type of stimulation helped reduce the risk of dementia. It's a lot of fun too! Although some of our songs are country western – most are not. Along with western music, we dance to artists such as Michael Bublé, Rod Stewart, Jim Croce, Shawn Mende,s and Camilla Cabello with songs like Blame it on the Bossa Nova, Caught in the Moonlight, Cake by the Ocean, etc. Line dance classes are once a week: Beginner (1): Tuesday, 10:30 – 11:30 am Improver (2): Monday, 12:30 – 2 pm Intermediate (3): Tuesday, 12 – 1:30 pm Want to try it out? Come on by. Beginner's class is $5 (60 minutes). Other levels are $7 (90 minutes). You do not have to be a club member for the first couple of 'try it' classes. These discussions will cover a variety of topics such as lead and follow techniques, body alignment, musicality, etc. Carrie Kloss, a champion dancer, and professional instructor provides the dance instruction. She has many years of experience providing dance instruction to all levels of dancers from beginners to dance instructors. The dance being taught changes each month. In June it will be Swing and in July it will be Tango. The dance being taught in June is East Coast Swing. This dance traces its roots to Lindy Hop (also called Jitterbug). It was originally danced in the 1920s and 1930s to big band music. In the 1940s it became a ballroom dance called Eastern Swing that eventually was changed to be called, East Coast Swing. It is a fun, upbeat, non-progressive dance that is characterized by its bounce, back break (rock step), and swing hip action. It is danced in a circular pattern. East Coast Swing is best suited to being danced to the 1950s rock and roll style of music although you can dance it to a wide range of music and music tempos making it a popular dance for new dancers. The Lesson Review and Practice Parties are held in Abravanel Hall from 2:30 to 4:30 pm each week on Mondays. Marvin and Lynn Wheeler, who are very experienced dancers, review Wednesday's lessons and provide help upon request. After the review, you can practice your dancing to a variety of ballroom music. The party is FREE, just drop in. These parties are open to all residents of OHCC and guests of members. The annual membership dues for the Ballroom Dance Club are $10 per person. With this membership you will receive regular emails describing club activities as well as discounts for dances. To join, just drop your check off at the front desk.
