40 | LIFE IN SOLERA | JUNE 2023 | HIGH NOTES FROM KARAOKE On April 25, we lost Harry Belafonte, one of America's greatest entertainers, who passed away at the age of 96. He was nicknamed the "King of Calypso." His album Harry Belafonte Calypso was his third album and was on the Billboard Music Charts for 34 weeks. From this album came two of Belafonte's greatest hits, "Day'O" and "Jamaica Farewell." As the years passed, other artists had songs with a Caribbean, Reggae, or Calypso flavor on the music charts. Here's my short list of a few. • My Boy Lollipop, Millie Small • Day Aer Day, Shango • e Tide Is High, Blondie • I Shot e Sheriff, Eric Clapton • Volcano, Jimmy Buffett • Concrete & Clay, The Unit 4 Plus 2 • Pata Pata, Mirium Makeba • Kingston Town, UB40 • Red Red Wine, UB-40 • Kokomo, The Beach Boys • e Electric Slide (Electric Boogie), Marcia Griffith • Electric Avenue, Eddy Grant • Who Let e Dogs Out, The Baha Men • Late In e Evening, Paul Simon • All Night Long, Lionel Richie • Montego Bay, Bobby Bloom • Marianne, Terry Gilkyson & The Easy Riders • Grazing In e Grass, Hugh Masekela • In e Summertime, Mungo Jerry • e Israelites, Desmond Dekker • I Like To Move It, Erick Morillo & Sacha Baron Cohen • Man Smart (Woman Smarter), Harry Belafonte, Robert Palmer You can sing and dance to the great songs inspired by Harry Belafonte or any other artist.
