Classic Film Group Join us for Citizen Kane, Orson Welles' first movie and AFI's #1 movie of all time on July 25 or Aug. 1 at 6 pm in The Lodge Theater. Citizen Kane follows a reporter's investigation into millionaire Charles Kane's obscure dying words. Through flashbacks, the audience learns about Kane's fascinating rise to and fall from power, while solving the riddle of his last words. When a reporter is assigned to decipher newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane's (Orson Welles) dying words, his investigation gradually reveals the fascinating portrait of a complex man who rose from obscurity to staggering success. Though Kane's friend and colleague Jedediah Leland (Joseph Cotten), and his mistress Susan Alexander (Dorothy Comingore), shed fragments of light on Kane's life, the reporter fears he may never penetrate the mystery of the elusive man's final word, "rosebud." Through flashbacks, the audience learns about Kane's fascinating rise to and fall from power. He finds evidence of a child torn away from his family to serve mammon. Grown into manhood, Kane becomes a newspaperman to indulge his idealism. He marries the niece of the man who will become President of the United States, and gradually assumes more and more power while losing more and more of his soul. Kane's money and power do not bring him happiness and he loses his youthful idealism, as has the America for which he is a symbol. Note: Orson Welles watched John Ford's Stagecoach over 40 times before making Citizen Kane. ~ Paul Plamondon, 4seasonsmoviegroup@gmail.com FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2023 41 NOTE: There will be no Counter Culture Cinema Club screenings in July.
