| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2023 | 51 "The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul." ~ Alfred Austin The Painted Lady Butterfly was the happy topic of our June meeting. In a PowerPoint presentation narrated by our own Janis Rice, not only did we learn wonderful things about these beautiful creatures, we could also purchase a caterpillar kit to bring them to our own gardens. Once they evolve into their beautiful butterfly stage, they will return to the same place every year. This month's "Tid- Bit of the Month" from Pat Pennington, our Garden of Eat-em guy: to super- charge your tomatoes, soak banana peels in a gallon of water for two or three days then throw away the peels and use the water to feed your tomatoes. Pat loves to talk about vegetable gardening so give him a call if you have questions at (951) 314-9229. July is going to be eventful. Beginning with the Fourth of July Golf Cart Parade, look for the Garden Club's entry (see last year's entry below). Then on July 12, our meeting will feature Fairy Gardens. Pat Clayes will demonstrate her techniques for creating fairy gardens in small containers. Pat is a UCR Master Gardener and comes with a wealth of knowledge. Her background includes being a judge for the National Garden Club Inc.'s Master Flower Show; she's also on the Board of Directors of the California Garden Club Inc. serving as social media and awards chairperson. Lastly, the Garden Club's popular bus trips are back! The first one is scheduled for Thurs., July 27 to Grand Traditions Garden in Fallbrook. You need not be a member to join us but space is limited so check with Evelyn Hawkins (951) 845-7199 for information and ticket availability. Guests are always welcome to attend one of our meetings which are on the second Wednesday of every month at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom (unless otherwise announced). Dates for the next few months are Aug. 9, Sept. 13, and Oct. 11. Dues are only $15 a year. For more information, contact President Beverly Agner at (951) 306 7379; for membership questions, call Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101. Garden Club
