18 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | JULY 2023 By Brad Hyman, Resident Have you driven down Highway 74 through Romoland and noticed the large, beautiful wooden barn on the north side of the road, about 10 miles east of Solera Diamond Valley? Did you know that it is the home of the Motte Historical Museum, that it is open to the public, and admission is free?! Did you know that when you enter this beautiful barn, you are taken back in time to explore simpler times and the area's history from the Roaring 20s to the Niy 50s? e Motte Historical Museum was designed and built by the Motte family, who were among the pioneers of the area that now includes Perris, Romoland, Homeland, Nuevo and Lakeview. e Motte family immigrated to America in the 1880s and soon became a major presence in the local farming community, growing and selling potatoes, onions, and grains. e family became involved in developing real estate in the area for both agriculture and homes. On the second floor of the Museum, you will see displays of how the area has grown over the decades and how the Motte family was instrumental in that growth. On the main level of the Museum is the spectacular Motte Family Car Collection. ere are dozens of rare and vintage automobiles dating from around 1910 to the late 1960s. e collection is owned and operated by the Motte Family, and each car has both a written and a digital account of its history. Every car is in sparkling, pristine condition, and is displayed so that you can walk up and enjoy their beautiful exteriors and interiors. And for ambience, there is also a full-size mock-up of a nostalgic 1950s diner. Be prepared to take pictures because every step offers incredible photo opportunities. e staff inside the Museum is welcoming and helpful, and if your timing is right, you may even run into Leon Motte, one of the remaining Motte family members who founded the Museum and is always willing to answer questions and share stories. Outside the entrance are picnic tables in the shade. You are welcome to bring snacks, sit, and enjoy the ambiance of the Barn. e Museum is also available to rent for weddings and other events. Admission is completely free (there is a place to leave a donation, which assists the Motte's non-profit organization to maintain the Museum and keep it open and immaculate). ere is also a gi shop inside to purchase souvenirs such as hats, shirts, books, and automobile memorabilia.
