By Kathy Caraher, Resident e year started off with a planning meeting to create some wonderful events for the year. We normally meet the second Tuesday of each month unless we have an adventure planned. If going offsite, we carpool to some site of garden interest and then lunch at an interesting and recommended restaurant. Our first event featured the garden of resident/member Jim Austen. He has created raised garden beds with automatic watering systems, frost protection and ease of use. His veggies looked healthy and ready to harvest. He has a wealth of knowledge, sharing many important points about his project, including sources for getting started. If there is interest in the community, he would love to know if anyone wants to help create a vegetable co-op. In March we had planned to visit the Super Bloom of spring flowers at Diamond Lake, but the inclement weather kept us home. As a substitute I invited the community to visit my garden. e extensive rains we had created profuse blooms of brilliant California poppies, bearded Iris, roses, and wildflowers. In April we went to the Green umb Nursery in San Marcos. ey have thousands of plants, garden décor, tools, gis, pots and even some California Native Plants. Aerwards, our original plans called for going to the Yellow Deli, but they were closed for their annual holiday. We pivoted to the Belching Beaver, which turned out to be great food and a lot of laughs about its name. May brought us to Finch Frolic in Fallbrook, a Permaculture Garden that opened our eyes to how to garden with nature. It represents methods of growing that have been used worldwide for centuries, which have now mostly been abandoned since the introduction of chemical-based living. It makes it cheaper to produce healthier plants by supporting the soil's structure, allowing it to lessen your gardening chores and increase harvest with fruits, vegetables and/or flowers and plants. Aerwards we enjoyed lunch on the patio at the Fallbrook Garden Café. Upcoming events are: July 11 – Speaker at the Lodge, lunch, if you like, TBD. Aug. 8 – Press Butterfly Garden in Murrieta, lunch TBD. Sept. 12 – Speaker at the Lodge. Lunch, if you like, TBD. Oct. 10 (date tentative) - Temecula Olive Oil Ranch – lunch TBD. Nov. 14 – Kimberley Crest House and Garden, Redlands. Lunch at Martha Greens. Dec. 12 (date tentative) – Christmas Party.
