42 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2023 | With summer upon us, we can head to the beaches and nearby trails that border beaches in San Diego County for some terrific hikes and walks. Mid-July found us on the Torrey Pines Beach Trail, scenic and enjoyable; Encinitas was inviting, as mid-July we found a break in the tides and walked from Moonlight Beach to Beacon Beach. Late in the month of July we enjoyed walking the San Elijo Lagoon. August will be a good time for old and new members to join us for a local walk, Carlsbad State Beach on Aug. 11. Since we are emailing hikes and walks scheduled activities, club members will learn of upcoming activities. e Hikers and Walkers Club has over 250 members and offers two levels of experiences: casual walks of three miles or less, and more vigorous hikes. Our schedules of walks and hikes alternates between ursdays and Fridays. Sometimes we offer an additional hike on Saturdays to accommodate members who still work during week days. We walk around the OHCC loop every day at 8 am in the overflow parking lot. You can join and meet fellow club members as you walk our 2.5-mile loop, some taking 45 minutes, others slower at 60 minutes. Your pace depends on your fitness level. All residents are invited to join us — members or not. In September, our annual picnic will take place. In the past, we drove south to a park in Encinitas. But this year we decided to stay "home," have our picnic on the Palm Court. Our date is in the third week of September. We have plenty of time to contact our membership and invite each one to join the Hikers and Walkers Board to lunch with ample seating and background music. June's early BBQ had over 80 members enjoying a sunny aernoon with burgers and brats courtesy of the club, and a magnificent collection of potluck dishes from the members including: Cowboy caviar to a full street taco setup, complete with homemade tortillas and great guacamole. ese BBQs are open to club members only on Aug. 27, Sept. 24 and Oct. 22. It's not too late in the year to join and learn how to play bocce. Leagues are being formed monthly for players of all levels. Our first two leagues were a huge success for the players and their enthusiasm is driving more at different times of the day and days of the week. Leagues are usually two or four people on a team, playing weekly for six weeks, in either morning or aernoon games. As the weather heats up, at least one bocce and wine league will start late aernoon followed by courtside with your favorite wine.
