| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2023 | 19 Be a good golf neighbor. The GAC would like to remind residents of three HOA rules for those living on the golf course. 1) No planting or landscaping by residents is allowed on the golf course side of the wall, no matter how much you believe it improves the area. 2) Resident installed fencing of any kind just inside the perimeter wall on the golf course wall to increase its effective height is not allowed. 3) Please do not feed wildlife. This includes ducks and geese. Feeding encourages these waterfowl to become residents and discourages their normal seasonal migration. Even more importantly, do not feed coyotes or bobcats. Be aware that leaving out pet bowls in the backyard can lead to an unintended food source. Feeding these animals reduces their natural fear of humans that can create a safety risk to residents and especially their pets. Regardless of how good it makes your feel to look out for the welfare of our native wildlife, you are doing them and your fellow residents a great disservice. Be a good golf member. The GAC has received inquiries regarding the rules and proper usage of golf handicaps. This usually involves posting acceptable scores or posting at all. The GAC does not intervene in club management. Typically, golf clubs at Sun Lakes have a Handicap Chair as part of their Board that performs this function within the club. Two basic premises underlie the USGA Handicap System, namely that each player will try to make the best score at every hole in every round and that every acceptable round is posted for peer review. The player and the Handicap Chair share this responsibility. If a player fails to post an acceptable score after completion of the round, the Handicap Chair has three options: 1) Post the actual score made by the player; 2) Post a penalty score equal to the lowest/highest handicap differential in the players scoring record; 3) Post the actual score and a penalty score. This policy comes directly from the SCGA/GHIN web site (see details clearly outlined in "Getting Members to Post"). Be a good golf participant. The GAC has also been asked to weigh in on procedures involving incorrect scorecards or player breaking golf tournament rules. In a golf event if any player witnesses an infraction they should bring it to the attention of the tournament organizer and/or Pro Shop at the conclusion of play. The event organizer has sole discretion in running the event and disqualifying a participant for a rules/scoring violation. Decisions are usually made in conjunction with the Pro Shop and any ruling is final. The GAC is made up of representatives from Sun Lakes seven Golf Clubs and two at large members who work together to best advise clubs and event organizers without issuing directives or decisions. "Strive to make your golf handicap for bragging and handicap for competition one in the same." Golf Advisory Sun Lakes Committee Reports Our Volunteer Advisory Committee is comprised of residents with varied skill sets and business backgrounds. We research, observe, and collaborate. Our focus is to make Sun Lakes more enjoyable for all while enhancing revenue. Do you have food industry or related experience you'd like to share? Pick up an Interest Form in the Main Clubhouse Lobby, fill it out, and return to the reception desk. Save your AC and enjoy hot August nights with friends and a cool drink at the Lounge or on the Veranda. There's Happy Hour Wednesdays and Thursdays, pool food and drink service Fridays and Saturdays, and weekend Veranda entertainment. There is also beer and wine service at the Lobby bar across from the Main Clubhouse Library. We have become aware that some residents are monopolizing tables of 10 or 12 with only one or two people seated for long periods of time while others leave events for lack of seating. We ask everyone to be considerate of your neighbors. Bring your group but do not exclude neighbors and members. We welcome your suggestions on how to remedy this in the best interest of us all. The Sandwedge is closed for renovations. During this transition, you can still get breakfast in the Restaurant. Trust us, it will be worth the wait including a mini pub, big screen TVs, and new bar area. Mark your calendar for the big reveal in time for Monday night football on Sept. 11. Don't rue August cause it's hot; summer isn't going anywhere soon. Adjust your thermostats at home and come out and keep cool at the Main Clubhouse. August is a spectacular month. The August Moon is Aug. 1, offering the brightest moon of the year… it almost rivals the sun and was considered by Greece great luck to hold opening night of the Olympics on this night. August is known as Homemade Pie Month and the Egyptians were first to use wheat, oats, rye or barley, filled with honey. Romans made meat pies to preserve meat for long journeys. Fruit pies came much later by American settlers. When soldiers were asked why they were going off to war, they replied, "For Mom and apple pie." The first Thursday in August is Pale Ale Day so check out selections offered at the Lounge. Aug. 6 to 12 shines a spotlight on romance and kindness. A simple gesture may be an invite to our happy hour; it could make someone's day or their week. National Afternoon Tea Week is Aug. 7 to 13. Enjoy a delicious dessert and cup of tea or a cup of coffee if you prefer. Our Restaurant and Lounge are here for you. Come out, enjoy the cool atmosphere and camaraderie of your friends and neighbors. The Sun Lakes Brunch is always the last Sunday of the month and is always spectacular.
