28 | LIFE IN SOLERA | AUGUST 2023 | RV GROUP RVING WOMEN I can remember camping from the back of my parents 1960s Country Squire station wagon. Food was in a Coleman ice cooler and our bedding was, well, adequate. That's where I first learned about nature and astronomy. There were no electronic devices, just spooky stories by the crackling campfires, and Coleman lanterns to aid me in finding restrooms. Well, I'm all grown-up and I am not going to prevent myself from experiencing that lifestyle except now I prefer a cleaner restroom and comfy mattress without crawling critters. My pops or companion are not around either so I decided to invest in my own RV/trailer. To my surprise, I've found more independent women out on the road, "glamping." I've also noticed this lifestyle getting younger and more diverse. I'm seeing social media encourage more women to travel/ work by RV. Currently, I'm enjoying traveling memory lane with my, new-to-me, retro 50s-style travel trailer. It just takes someone to plant the seed, as my folks did and now that I've had a taste of outdoorsy lifestyle and camaraderie that comes with it, I don't think it's something I could ever give up. First, I recommend a woman (or man) find what works best. Consider the budget that's right for you. There are different classifications: A, B, C. They go from largest, Class A, to smallest, Class B, to middle-sized, Class C. During the pandemic, I drove a smaller Class C that kept me exploring while social distancing. Class C was easy as driving a family van and having all the conveniences. Whether you rent or purchase from a dealer or private, you can learn from the seller how to work the unit. There are also great YouTube tutorials. Join Solera's RV group, talk to others with similar interests, or just go solo. That's the beauty of this lifestyle, you can do as you wish, when you wish, just be careful! I sometimes prefer to invite my sister or a friend as co-pilot when I go camping. Personally, I'd love to see more women out there. Additionally, helping your spouse/partner with the drive can be handy. Supporting one another set-up/break down camp helps. Taking an Uber to explore a town or unhitching and driving your vehicle around works too. Ladies remember, "You have more courage and stamina than you realize. Your options are limitless. Your mountain is waiting." Submitted by Lynn Lopez, Solera resident & RV Group Member
