Couples Golf
August is that time of year when the Couples Golf Club transforms from a mostly social,
friendly day-on-the-golf-course with friends, enjoying fun and creative games designed to
equal the playing field and make everyone's day better to something WAY different. The Club
Championship tournament.
Once each year, the couples who have played in at least 10 weekend tournaments together
qualify to compete for the Couples Club Championship title. Victory, bragging rights, fame,
and even a little fortune.
This is a two-weekend competition started on July 30 with a Low Gross/ Low Net, best
Gross/Net ball of each couple. Aug. 6 was aggregate score, adding up both scores for each
couple gross and net. There were also closest-to-the-pin contests on all Par 3s for both men
and women. The final day started with coffee and muffins and, thanks to Sandy Howell,
snacks, drinks, and homemade beef jerky (hers is the best on the planet). She even had
refreshments waiting for everyone at the cross-roads.
Two couples who both have held the title of Club Champions were once again in the lead
going into the final day. Cristy Glinoga with Gary Heading and Bill and Kari Steinwart. It was
a fight to the finish. Kari Steinwart was closest to the pin on EVERY par 3. That's how she
psyches out her opponents — by playing really well. That earned her $40 and ruined the self
esteem of the rest of us. For the men, Gary Headding was closest to the pin on two of the four
par 3s for $20. Gary Little and Pete Peterson won the other two for $10 each.
Final results of this amazing competition: First Gross were Bill and Kari Steinwart who
defended their title once again with an impressive performance under tremendous pressure
from First Net winners Gary Headding and Cristy Glinoga. Second Net winners Pete and
Kim Peterson pulled off a Cinderella-story performance. Congratulations to the winners and
everyone who participated.
