| OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2023 | 15 Village Squares Village Squares missed two weeks of dancing while the HVAC was being installed, but we came back strong! Our students have completed the SSD (Social Square Dance) system begun when we resumed dancing aer the COVID hiatus. is enabled students to begin actual dancing in a much shorter amount of time. Our caller, Mike Haworth, has been also introducing students to some of the more advanced mainstream and plus calls. Our co- president, Robert Gross, has each week listed with the calls being taught and where to find them for practice. We are now looking forward to once again inviting other neighboring clubs to our annual Halloween dance. We had to eliminate this while we regrouped aer returning but are ready to reintroduce this very fun and exciting time. We are anxious to host other clubs for an evening with plenty of food, our special punch, Halloween décor, and many costumed dancers. is will take place Oct. 25 and promises to be a wonderful evening of fun, food, and lots of dancing, so mark your calendars now! ~ Written by Valerie ompson Ballroom Dance Our monthly dances are usually held on the second Friday of the month. e October dance will be on Fri., Oct. 13 in Abravanel Hall from 7 to 9:45 pm. e cost will be $15/member or $20/non- member. e band will be Musicstation. e club sponsors ballroom dance lessons each week on Wednesdays in Abravanel Hall from 2 to 4 pm. • 2 – 2:45 pm Beginner Class • 2:45 – 3:15 pm Dance Tips and Techniques for both Beginners and Intermediates • 3:15 – 4 pm Intermediate Class e cost for the Beginner or Intermediate class is $10/person per class for both members and nonmembers. Pay at the door (no reservations required, just come). e Dance Tips and Techniques discussion is open at no charge to both Beginner and Intermediate dancers. Carrie Kloss, a champion dancer, and professional instructor provides the dance instruction. She has many years of experience providing dance instruction to all levels of dancers from beginners to dance instructors. e dance being taught changes each month. e following is the class schedule for the remainder of this year: October, Viennese Waltz and November, West Coast Swing. e dance being taught in October is Viennese Waltz. e Viennese Waltz, so called to distinguish it from the Waltz, is the oldest of the current ballroom dances but its music is almost twice as fast as the slow Waltz. It emerged in the second half of the 18th century and became very popular in Vienna. e dance reached and spread to England sometime before 1812. It was introduced as the German waltz and became a huge hit. It gained ground through e Congress of Vienna at the beginning of the 19th century. e Viennese Waltz is a very elegant and magical dance that is characterized by its turns, speed, sway, and rise and fall. However, because it is almost twice as fast as the Waltz, the rise and fall and sway are significantly less in this dance. Today, you will see this dance in competitions and on TV shows such as Dancing with the Stars. e Lesson Review and Open Practice sessions are held in Abravanel Hall from 2:30 to 4:30 pm each week on Mondays. Marvin and Lynn Wheeler, who are very experienced dancers, review Wednesday's lessons and provide help upon request. Aer the review, you can practice your dancing to a variety of ballroom music. e party is FREE, just drop in. ese sessions are open to all OHCC residents and guests of members. e annual membership dues for the Ballroom Dance Club are $10 per person. With this membership you will receive regular emails describing club activities as well as discounts for dances. To join, just drop your check off at the front desk.
