60 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2023
On Sept. 4, the Tennis Club held its first
ever Tennis/Poker Doubles Tournament.
Someone upstairs was doing our club a
big favor as the temperature on that day was
simply perfect. The unbearable triple-digit
temps have magically disappeared. The high
was 76 degrees. How incredible was that?
So, for those of you who did not attend the
event, you are probably wondering - what the
heck is a tennis/poker doubles tournament?
Okay, here goes. Tournament participants
are randomly paired up to play against other
doubles teams. The players on the winning
team of each match would receive two
playing cards, while the losers would each
get one card. The two teams will then go on
to play other teams. Again, winners would
get two cards each, and losers would get one
card each. All players would play the same
number of matches.
At the end of the tournament, the players
who won more matches would have received
more cards than those who did not win as
many matches. Every player would show
any five of the cards he/she has accumulated.
The player who holds the highest poker hand
wins the tournament. In other words, you
can end up winning the tournament even if
you lost all the matches and you have never
even seen a deck of cards in your entire
life. It is all through the luck of draw, while
enjoying some fun and competitive tennis
matches. Now, is that crazy or what? To top it
off, we finished the event with a scrumptious
BBQ on the Courts patio. Everyone had a
marvelous time!
So, here are the winners:
Chuck Beckman – Best poker hand
Loren Duchesne – 2nd best poker hand
Larry Martin – 3rd best poker hand
Prizes were awarded to all the above
winners.
Prizes were also awarded to Mike Olson
and Larry Zimmerman who each won in
their respective special category.
Congratulations to all the winners!
There you have it. Who says tennis is
boring?! Beat you all to The Courts!
