28 | THE COLONY NEWS | OCTOBER 2023 | e Colony Cousins Genealogy Club will present "A How-To Guide to Using DNA Test Results in Genealogical Research" by Kathleen Fernandes, Ph.D. is presentation provides step- by-step guidance on how to approach the analysis of DNA testing data and apply the results in your genealogical research. Topics to be covered include testing strategies, confirming relationships to family members tested, verifying the branches in your tree, identifying "surprise" cousins, and addressing brick walls in your distant ancestry. Kathleen Fernandes earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Stanford University and worked as a systems analyst designing military IT systems for the Department of Defense. Since retiring, she has been actively researching her Portuguese ancestry and became interested in genetic genealogy as a way to break through the walls she encountered. She is particularly interested in tools and techniques for analyzing DNA data in endogamous populations. e presentation will be Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 1 pm in the Annex. Visitors are always welcome. Genealogy By Greg Griffes, 951-383-9988 Beginners Italian Language Class By Ornella Atwell Italian Language classes will begin Wednesday, Oct. 11. As mentioned in the September issue of e Colony News, learning a new language provides multiple benefits and advantages. Joining this class may allow you to attain some of these. If traveling to Italy, it may make your next trip easier to navigate and allow you to communicate with locals and share a few laughs in their native language. However, even if no trips are planned, learning a new language will stimulate your brain, challenge your memory, improve your cognitive skills and slow down their decline. You will meet new friends and have FUN while you learn, so do plan to join this FREE beginners class! We will meet in the Card Room in the Clubhouse at 11 am for one hour every Wednesday except the fourth Wednesday of the month. e only requirement is to get the book, Easy Italian, Step-by-Step by Paola Nanni-Tate.
