Table Tennis/Ping Pong
As summer becomes fall, a few of us got hit with Covid, most likely the newest variant. Fortunately,
the symptoms went away, though some were worse than others, and all are well now. Only a hardy few
stayed on during this temporary dip in attendance. One such hardy fellow is in the spotlight this month.
Dr. Richard Ochart is semi-retired and still practicing his skills as a chiropractor. Someone we know
"has our back" when we play our games should anything get out of order. In fact there was an episode
one day, where on the request of a fellow player with severe chronic back pain
and unable to hit the ball, Richard was called in to do an adjustment on the
spot. Sure enough, it worked, and the player was able to return to the game,
to the delight of all.
He came to SLCC in 2013 with wife, Arlette. They are a blended family with
several kids and grandkids. He was born in New York City, joined the U.S. Navy in
1962, became a medical corpsman, and was assigned to a Riverine Patrol Boat unit
during the Viet Nam war. After the war, he traveled around the world. He went to Woodstock
back in the day, but doesn't remember what happened.
Richard loves Ping Pong, and never played in an organized club until he came to SLCC. He likes
to swim and do crossword puzzles with friends, and loves to eat spicy foods especially Filipino and
Puerto Rican.
We usually play Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 4 to 6 pm, and Saturdays,10 am to 12 pm, but it is
best to check the SLCC website for updated schedule changes, because sometimes we get bumped, due
to other community activities going on. Hard copies of the schedule are available on game days in the
Main Clubhouse Ballroom. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact Gary Lile at (805)
