18 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | DECEMBER 2023 | Sun Lakes Committee Reports The Master Architectural Committee has had a busy and exciting year. We have reviewed more than 1,000 applications for improvements to the house or modifications of landscaping of front and back yards. Approximately 250 applications involved repainting the exterior or trim of houses. Owners are required to paint wood trim every four years and stucco every 16 years. Approximately 100 applications involved installing, removing, or replacing patio covers. Approximately 250 applications involved installing artificial turf or relandscaping front or backyards to make them more drought tolerant or removing or replacing trees that had grown so big as to create a safety hazard. Sun Lakes Rules and CC&Rs provide: • Each lot shall have one 15-gallon or bigger tree. • Any drought-tolerant landscape should have a balance between hardscape (concrete, tile, rock, etc.) And softscape (grass, drought-tolerant plants, artificial turf ). A balance of 30 percent softscape and 70 percent hardscape is acceptable. Approximately 100 applications involved installing security lights, security cameras, solar power, or solar-powered cameras or lights. Sun Lakes Rules and CC&Rs require the following: • Security light fixtures and cameras must respect your neighbor's privacy. The cameras should not record anything beyond your property line. • Security light fixtures must be under 550 lumens (40-watt light bulbs or 9-watt LED light bulbs). • Exterior lighting shall not cause an unreasonable glare or illumination upon any other private or common area lots. Approximately 150 items involved violations of the CC&Rs or Architectural Rules or involved unapproved improvements on the homeowners' property. • When any home goes into escrow; the exterior of the home is inspected by Sun Lakes Planning and Compliance to ensure any and all improvements to that home have been approved by the Master Architectural Committee and there are no violations of the CC&Rs or Architectural Rules. • Sun Lakes Planning and Compliance Department has daily visual inspections, from the streets or common areas of Sun Lakes, to ensure compliance with the CC&Rs and the Architectural Rules. The remaining applications fall into the miscellaneous category. They included installing sheds, hot tubs, permanent barbecues, moving the location of air conditioners, sunshades, trellises, neighbor disputes, and other items. The Master Architectural Committee has read and reviewed every application that has been submitted. In some instances, Committee members have driven to the residences to inspect and verify the proposed improvements. The Committee members have devoted many hours in reviewing the approximately 1,000 applications. We have tried to be fair and impartial in applying the Rules, Regulations, and CC&Rs of Sun Lakes Country Club. We have tried to maintain the quality, beauty, and values of the homes in Sun Lakes by requiring compliance with the Rules, Regulations, and CC&Rs of Sun Lakes Country Club. We want to make Sun Lakes Country Club the number one 55 + community to live in. This is an older community, but if you visit some of the other 55+ communities near us you will agree Sun Lakes is the place to live. I have been privileged to work with the most dedicated Committee members. ~ Roy Nierman, Chairman, Master Architectural Committee Master Architectural As I begin to sum up our year of events and gatherings I first would like to give a shout out to the members of our Committee for their volunteerism and participation in ensuring that the entertainment and events held were successful in every way possible. Special thanks to the Recreation Department Administrative staff whom I had the pleasure of working with as well as the technical support, facilities, and food and beverage folks. The beautiful and creative decorations bring that extra joy and glamour to our Main Clubhouse and Ballroom; thanks to our AD HOC Committee for a job well done. The 2023 year couldn't have been successful without all of you working together with a positive attitude and willingness to serve. Many thanks to our Board without whose support these events and activities wouldn't be possible. What have we been doing all year? The Recreation Department and Advisory Committee plans for and provides you with Ice Cream Socials, Evenings on the Veranda, Music Under the Stars, tribute bands and various entertainment in the Ballroom, the Sunday Concert Series, Fourth of July activities, Halloween Doggie Parade, Veterans Walk, Activities Day, Fall and Spring Garage Sales, Community Shredding Day, Fall Crafts Fair, Health Fair, Monday Night Football, Christmas Tree Lighting, Christmas Outdoor Home Decorating Contest, and our grand finale, the New Year's Eve Gala. Our goal is to bring to Sun Lakes residents a variety of entertainment and programs to serve you well. We thank you for your participation and would like to hear from you if you have any suggestions for future programs. We meet every first Wednesday of the month at 2 pm in the Multipurpose Room, we welcome you to come out and attend any of our meetings. Recreation Advisory
